This book consist of many writers such as, Nicodemus, Clement, Barnabus, Secrets of Enoch etc., that should have been included in the bible. It will search, and dig deep down into your heart, and will lighten it. One will find a true desire for the love of God! Word of advice...buy a hardcover if you can find one, the softcovers comes apart at the binding !

Winston Graham (1908-2003) is the author of more than 40 novels, and is best known for the highly successful Poldark series. Late eighteenth-century Cornwall comes to life with Thorne's excellent narration, and he's a master of dialect. The everyday occurrences, as well as the conflicts and the war with France, provide an interesting background for the interaction between the Poldark and Warleggan families. The book itself is character driven; however, Thorne gives each one an individuality the listener can relate to. THE BLACK MOON: A GEM OF A NOVEL

The Poldark Series continues. The time is February 1794. In the opening pages, the author evokes an image of a sleepy Cornwall in the depths of a harsh and frigid winter. George Warleggan continues to expand his power and influence over the community. His wife Elizabeth (once Ross Poldark's great love) has given birth to a son, Valentine. Her son from her previous marriage to Ross' cousin Francis, Geoffrey Charles, has been given a governess, Morwenna Chynoweth (a cousin of Elizabeth's) to tutor him.

Two of Demelza's brothers, Sam and Drake Carne, both ardent Methodists, come to Ross and Demelza, seeking a new life for themselves in the community. Ross is not exactly thrilled to have them there. But he gives Sam a job working in one of his mines and Drake assumes a trademan's life. With the coming of the Carnes, Methodism in the community is given a considerable boost, which doesn't sit well with a number of the local notables.

The novel goes on to describe the ongoing relationship between Caroline and Dr. Dwight Enys, who had gone into the Navy when it seemed impossible that he and Caroline could marry over the objections of Caroline's uncle and guardian, who had deemed Dr. Enys as socially unsuitable for his niece, who soon stood to acquire an inheritance. The ship on which Dwight is serving as a surgeon is involved in a naval battle near the French coast, and most of the ship's survivors, including Dwight, are taken prisoner. When Caroline gets wind of this, she begins, with Ross, a campaign for Dwight's freedom.

There is also a developing relationship between Morwenna and Drake, which creates further conflict between the Poldarks and the Warleggans.

Again, as in the other novels of the Poldark Series, this is a novel that never falters. Besides the principal characters, there are also a number of minor characters who further enliven and enrich the drama. This is some of the best historical fiction you'll ever find.

So, take a seat by the window of your favorite room or stay in bed one holiday or weekend morning and enjoy what is a richly textured, well-told story. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

I love to read

I started on these books after watching the newest TV version of Poldark. I love to read, and these books have become my all time favorites! The writing is outstanding. You fall in love with the characters. The story is fast moving, no dull and boring parts. I sit down to read for a bit and find myself unable to put it down. I an so very glad there are so many of them. I never want them to end!

Ross Poldarks story continues in the The Black Moon.

Thorughly enjoyed this book. It is the 5th in a series of 12 books. If you were lucky enough to catch the TV show when it aired last year, this book will help answer questions as to what happens to our hero Ross Poldark. I plan to finish the series and am already sad to think I will be coming to the end. Series 2 of the show is being released in Britain in Sep 16. Expect the books to gain lots of new fans. Winston Graham is a masterful story teller.

PHTLS book review

I have been a paramedic since the mid 80's, this book was required for recert of PHTLS card. Unfortunately, by the time recert comes around again it will be time for the next edition. Good, informative book and should be in library of your department, but not necessarily in a personal one. It also comes with computer disc that helps if this is your first time, or trauma isn't your strong point. PHTLS is similar to the other alphabet soup courses like BTLS, AMLS, ATLS etc... Deals with trauma. I do recommend however, that all EMS providers join the NAEMT as it is our voice that makes changes happen.

Great Book.

Took the course this last weekend at UCLA-Daniel Freeman. The course was good, got lots of hands on scenarios, but the stuff in the book was gold. The chapter on kinematics of trauma was better than my whole EMT school on understanding trauma. Coolest thing about it in my personal opinion? It defines Trauma.

The complete teachings, beliefs, and doctrines of the catholic church

The complete teachings, beliefs, and doctrines of the catholic church all in one book. The OED defines “catechism” as “An elementary treatise for instruction in the principles of the Christian religion, in the form of question and answer; such a book accepted and issued by a church as an authoritative exposition of its teaching….” This is a useful definition for understanding what kind of information can be found in the catechism.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church was approved by Pope John Paul II in 1992. Obviously, the information contained in it was not new—it is based on the Bible, documents from church councils, encyclicals, previous versions of the catechism, and other Church documents that predate it by hundreds of years.

The Catechism is meant to be used as a reference work. It’s organized clearly with an extensive table of contents and a glossary. I wouldn’t recommend trying to read it from cover to cover, though you certainly can if you’re of such a mind to do so.

The Catechism is easy to find. It’s available for free on the Vatican website, though since I hate reading on the computer, I don’t find it more beneficial for anything save the search function. Printed copies are easily available used, new, paperback, hardcover, trade paperback, mass market paperback, e-reader, and any form you could want. As long as it says “Catechism of the Catholic Church,” it’s the right book. Be aware that the
United States Catholic Catechism for Adults is a study supplement and does not contain the full text of the Catechism.

A must read for every thoughtful Protestant!

This book brings clarity to what is actually believed by the Catholic Church. If Protestants read this book they would realize that what they disagree with is not the Catholic Church but ther perceptions of what they think the Catholic Church believes or teaches. Very clear and concise! Very biblical in its presentation and gives clarity on the real role sacred scripture plays in doctrine and practice. Clarifies what Tradition actually is and how it provides a more accurate understanding of Sacred Scripture. Not a quick read but thorough treatment of essential truths of the Gospel and Christian faith.

Aside from the recipes and guidelines for petite fours, pre-desserts, dessert buffets and cakes, the book also has many adventurous and fun plated dessert recipes, such as “Warm pandan leaf -infused caramelized cream, black sesame genoa bread, hibiscus glaze, popcorn shoot (all part of the same dessert).

The book truly covers all the bases. As the review on StarChefs, who recently named it one of the top books of 2012, notes:

“[the book] delves succinctly into the creaming method, the custard method, the time and place for a meringue, the proper approach to composed cheese courses…The starkly beautiful pictures of Migoya’s modernist creations are, so to speak, the icing on the intricately composed cake”

As I mentioned, Migoya is frequently sought after for his advice on both the technical and aesthetic aspects of pastry. Joseph Baker, a well-known pastry chef and a Pastry and Baking instructor at Le Cordon Blue in Dallas TX, who is often consulted on advanced baking issues himself, said this about Migoya and his book

“He [Migoya] is actually the reason I now teach. He shares his creations and improves the overall landscape of food. Chef Migoya is a true pioneer in our industry and his book, The Elements of Dessert, is a perfect guide to contemporary pastry… any Migoya book is a must have.”

Even in a long career, it's never a bad idea to brush up on the basics, especially when it comes to pastry. The Elements of Dessert does just that, and no wonder. His best yet

As a self-taught chef, I am constantly on the lookout for books that will expand my training. Traditionally, books published by culinary schools have been written to accompany classroom instruction making them poor tools for independent learners. Francisco Migoya of the Culinary Institute of America takes a different approach to his books and his latest is certainly a winner for serious students of pastry.

Francisco Migoya is a professor at the Culinary Institute of America and previously has worked with Thomas Keller at French Laundry and Bouchon. In 2008 he released his highly acclaimed Frozen Desserts, which was followed with Modern Caf� in 2009 - another well received book. Now Migoya has released yet another girthy book that just oozes the knowledge that he's accumulated since Modern Caf�.

There's no stinginess of information with Migoya. With over 525 pages, covering: Basic elements, Pre-desserts, Plated desserts, Dessert buffets, Passed-around desserts, Cakes and Petits Fours, each section starts with a gorgeous photograph of the final dessert and assembly instructions. Following these, Migoya then breaks down each dessert with the individual recipes. While some basic knowledge is needed, Migoya doesn't assume that you know proper batter folding techniques or what tempering is. Clearly a first semester student in his class could have success with this book as well as a well-seasoned chef looking for new ideas.

The book is not without its flaws, although I find these to be far less noticeable than most pastry books. The publisher has separated the recipes from the photos and assembly directions. So if you want to see how to make the Salted Peanut Butter Ice Cream with Raising Jelly Veil on page 206, you will need to turn to page 257 to find the recipes. And likewise, if you're not fully awake you may even miss the transition from Toasted Milk Panna Cotta that starts on page 254 and continues right up against the Salted Peanut Butter Ice Cream on 257 separated only by a small logo and photo behind the recipe title. A designer was trying to be a bit too clever or efficient with space and made the organization more challenging than it needed to be. The other flaw is that Migoya has quite a few unique serving dishes, molds and ingredients, which the reader is referred to discover in a Resources section. There were a few items that I could not find in the Resources despite quite a bit of research - please tell me where to get the fillable tubes! But again, these two flaws are insignificant in comparison to the quality of the book.

If you're not convinced that $40US isn't a good investment, consider a few of the recipes:

*Bacon ice cream, Quebec maple syrup-flavored kataifi, brown butter panna cotta & burning hay scent
*Warm pandan leaf-infused caramelized cream, black sesame genoa bread, hibiscus glaze & popcorn shoots
*White miso pot de cr�me, green tea g�noise crumbs, kumquat marmalade, kumquat jelly

Some of the 200+ recipes are exotic but not so far out there that they're irrelevant. Most are common flavors prepared in the most modern and proven of techniques. I appreciate his ability to explain preparations for well-equipped kitchens but also for more humble kitchens - there are very few recipes that you can't make at home.

Migoya continues to prove himself as one of the top pastry chefs in the country and certainly one of the top pastry educators anywhere. Elements of Dessert is worth far more than its price, and certainly exceeds a much larger stack of books that sit on my shelf collecting dust.

A fantastic professional book for modern desserts

If you want to go beyond desserts targeted for the home cook like brownies, pies and cakes (not that there is anything wrong with those) this is the book to add to your collection. It is geared towards the professionals or the very ambitious and curious home cooks who want to know how the pros do it. Migoya gives us a fantastic insight into how the professionals think of, source, compose and create modern desserts. Even if we do not attempt any of the desserts from start to finish (I did try a couple already with great success), there is a lot to learn here about the restaurant pastry kitchen and the process of creating a proper dessert using multiple basic building blocks.

Beautiful photographs, modernist dessert recipes/techniques

You will want to put this cookbook on your coffee table to impress your foodie friends. The pictures are an incredible showcase of the modernist ingenuity of the recipes.

The layout of the book is very well thought out. You must be prepared to invest in ingredients and equipment to make the majority of the recipes in this book.

A suitable amount of background is recommended before attempting the recipes found later in the book and this background is provided in Chapter 1. Do not skip this chapter! The first chapter provides an extensive explanation of preparation and cooking methods (for example: tempering chocolate), an overview of flavor and texture profiles of ingredients, and even considerations in menu composition.

Subsequent chapters contain recipes and photographs grouped by the type of setting under which the dessert would be served (such as plated, in a buffet, cakes, etc.). The ingredient amounts in the recipes are weight based so at the very least you must have a kitchen scale.

In the end of the book is a list of on-line resources where unique ingredients or tools can be purchased which I found very helpful.

I'd recommend this book to anyone who has an appreciation of culinary artistry, and strongly recommend this book to chefs who enjoy modernist cooking.
