Impressed with the clarity

I was educated many years ago, way before they elaborated the human genome. I felt I needed to learn the language of genetics in order to understand current medical literature, so I purchased various books in this field. Unfortunately, all were above my head until I purchased this one. I have just begun to read the book, but my initial impression is that I will finally understand the subject. The book really does get down to basics and has a decent index as well. Highly recommended.

This book isn't a very good genetics textbook in my opinion

This book isn't a very good genetics textbook in my opinion. The concepts are so disorganized and make no logical sense especially for undergraduate students trying to connect the basics with harder conceptual ideas. Also, it is text heavy with only a few pictures that in themselves are hard to understand and conceptualize. This makes each chapter harder to read and makes it hard to retain the muddled information.

Funny, endearing, instant nostalgia in a book.

If you're looking for a change of scenery from your regular reading, something refreshingly innocent, humorous, charming, with a twinge of sadness, but overall hopeful and unique, than The House of Tomorrow is what you're looking for. Teenager Sebastian Prendergast lives in a glass dome on top of a hill overlooking a town in Iowa. Yes, I said it, Iowa. An unlikely place for a boy to find himself through punk-rock music, but the Minnesota girl in me loves it.

Parentless at a young age, Sebastian lives with his aging grandmother who homeschools him on the teachings of dead philosopher-architect Buckminster Fuller. Sebastian's grandmother has grand plans for him, somewhat new-age (though she hates the word) worldly plans. And her teachings and stories are all he's ever known. When his grandmother has a stoke while giving a tour of their dome, Jared is accompanied to the hospital by the Whitcomb family: single mother Janice, sarcastic son Jared, and icy damaged daughter Meredith. On that day, his whole world changes. When his grandmother kicks him out of the dome for having email conversations about punk-rock music with Jared, Sebastian goes to stay with the Whitcomb family. In the course of his weeks with them, he and the Whitcombs are changed and their worlds will never quite be the same.

Peter Bognanni's debut novel made me laugh more than once. The writing quality is good and appropriately simplistic, it's not trying to make you smarter, or make you feel stupid. It's trying to move you, and it will. The characters are crisp and realistic, images of them poured off the page as I read, and I can imagine this as a wonderful film. I sympathize with Sebastian, who is naive but not stupid, and I am thankful Bognanni made him intelligent enough with the outside world, instead of entirely unknowing of human interaction. I believe that Sebastian would use the sort of strange scientific language that he did, having been taught by his grandmother inside of a dome for the majority of his life; but I would have found it unrealistic if, say, he had no knowledge of how money works, or how to use a pay phone.

My favorite supporting character is Jared. Jared of the too-skinny jeans and punk-rock dreams. Of the stolen cigarettes and sarcastic one-liners. Jared is amusing and witty and wonderful. He and Sebastian form a unique bond and their interactions are the best parts of the story.

This book will change you; will make you look up the music of The Misfits; will make you recall your old, yet undying love for The Cure. It will make you nostalgic for your teenage years. It's simply a really good book; unique, with flawless dialogue, and touching characters that will stay with you when you're done reading.

Great read for older teens (and adults)

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. When I first started The House of Tomorrow, I thought it was going to be another story of a homeschooled teen raised by a new-age, out-of-touch grandmother who is forced into the "real world." It did start out that way. Sebastian's grandmother has been raising him in their geodesic dome house, where she homeschools him on the teachings of a futurist philosopher. He rarely leaves the house and his contact with others is mainly with people coming to tour their unique home. When his grandmother has a stroke, he is taken in by a family who is going through some pretty major problems of their own. A single mom is raising two rebellious teens, one of whom has had a heart transplant that his body is rejecting. Sebastian learns about punk music and experiences first love . . . and really his first friendship as well.

This book was so much deeper than I expected and really touching and funny. I was hooked from the first page and wasn't let go until the last. This is a book for older teens as their are sexual references and bad language. I highly recommend this thought provoking, as well as entertaining book.

I want to call the author up and thank him!

Firstly, when I read the blurb for "The House of Tomorrow", I couldn't believe it. How did a stranger come to write a book that would connect some impossible-to-connect dots of my personal history? It seemed patently absurd. When very young, I worshipped the Whole Earth Catalog, wanted to move back to land, build a dome, tried to, gave up, came to loathe the hippies and moved to New York CIty where I discovered just what Bognanni absolutely nails: the absolute inchoate rage and joy that comes from being a misfit kid who comes into their own through playing music or non-music, starting a band without a clue and without knowing a thing, and triumphing, if only for a blip in time. And this was me, and the characters in this absolutely sweet book. And then this kid, me, winds up immersed in Buckminster Fuller's idea's through another. This is true and this is also in this book. How could it be so? I still can not believe it.

So, yes, this is a most personal review. How can i not love this book? Bognanni brings it all back for me, perfectly, and with a twist, the Buckminster Fuller twist. I applaud not only nailing what it's like to be a lost child in a teenager's body, but also a burgeoning adult with wisdom, and conveying the love of simply listening to the Ramones so perfectly, but for making Fuller so interesting and accessible. How he came up with these two things together, punk rock and Fuller, is beyond me. Mr. Bognanni, how did you come to this? I really want to know!

The last time I thought an author may have met me and gotten into my own mind I was a child. I read this book like a kid, furiously, in two big gulps, and joyously. It moved me almost to tears, made me laugh, made me wildly happy. As I wrote, it was sweet, incredibly sweet, and I may be blinded by the subject matter, but even as it was that perfectly sweet, it never stung with saccharine. Perfect (oh, yes, I've basically said that already).

The blurb synopses the story and I need not repeat it here. I don't know how this book will speak to others since it was so personal for me. I am most curious. I admit that I fell in love with this book, and that kind of love is blinding. Do I recommend it? Unabashedly! Even if you don't have my own personal history, if you've ever been a young misfit, or are one now (though I suspect when I was young I would have tossed such a hopeful book across the room), or a dreamer, or even a parent with problems, or a human being, I suppose, this is simply a wonderful book. And I applaud the author, too, in this age of oh so self-conscious snark, for not once falling into that trap. Yes, sometimes there are happy endings and there is true goodness, and that stuff isn't all treacle.

Gabba Gabba Hey! Hurray for the House of Tomorrow! I haven't enjoyed a book this much since I was a kid. Is that a good enough review?!

I loved that each story told in Rae Jacob's book expressed deep and rich spiritual meaning in the face of that individual's Aha moment in life. The stories, along with Rae's insights and quotes, teaches the reader to be observant and recognize his or her own life's Aha moments. The book has become a favorite of mine; one that I revisit often and always come away with new uplifting insights! Highly recommend!

About the Author
Selwyn Lissack, artist, musician, author, lecturer and entrepreneur. Born and raised in South Africa. Studied art and music at Cape Town University. Conceived a new approach to painting inside liquid resin to produce three dimensional paintings of alien worlds. Participated in two music recordings, one as a leader. Selwyn has exhibited oils, sculptures and holograms in numerous galleries all over the world. He was the co-founder of the New York School of Holography and Holographic curator for the Dali Holograms at the Knoedler Gallery in New York City. In 1981, he became president of Laserworks, a company that manufactures Laser Systems. He was awarded several patents in Laser Scanning technology. In May of 2010 Selwyn gave a second public lecture at the Dali Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida describing his work and times with the great master artist Salvador Dali....... About the Author: Linda Lissack, artist, author, desktop publishing. Born and raised in Southern California. Studied art, dance and theater at Rancho Santiago College. Her graphic drawings, watercolors and oils are in collections around the world. She has beta tested Laser Animation software, created Laser Animations, Digital Art and Desktop publishing. Selwyn and Linda Lissack were married in 1980. They now live in Tucson, Arizona, where they enjoy working in the arts and creating new products.

I found this book fascinating, from the perspective of a holographer interested in historical holography. Sel describes many of the challenges faced by those exploring the medium in its early days, and provides a thorough account of the holograms produced for Dali.

This informative work describes an area of his work seldom seen nor known about. About the Author
James B.�Cunningham (PhD in�Science Education, Syracuse University) is Professor Emeritus of Science and Computer Education and former chair of the Department of Secondary Education at California State University, Northridge. Formerly chair of the Departments of Science and Mathematics in Washington State high schools, he is author of Teaching Metrics Simplified and co-author of BASIC for Teachers, Authoring Educational Software, Hands-On Physics Activities With Real-Life Applications, and Hands-On Chemistry Activities With Real-Life Applications.�He used SPSS extensively during his tenure as director of the Credential Evaluation Unit in the College of Education. He is currently a Fellow in the Center for Teaching and Learning at California State University, Northridge.

James O. Aldrich (Doctor of Public Administration, University of Laverne) is a retired lecturer on statistics and research methods at California State University, Northridge. He has served as principal investigator and codirector of a National Cancer Institute research project. He held the appointment of Instructor in the Department of Pathology at the University Of Southern California School Of Medicine. He has served on various committees for the Los Angeles chapter of the American Statistical Association and has taught biostatistics, epidemiology, social statistics, and research methods courses for 20 years. The primary statistical software used for his coursework has been SPSS. James has recently coauthored the book Using SPSS: An Interactive and Hands-on Approach which was published in July 2011 by Sage Publications.

Very practical!

SPSS is required for many graduate students and professors alike. Cunningham & Aldrich have taken a difficult (and sometimes boring) topic and made it clear and understandable. The numerous examples, pictures, and screen shots help the reader follow along and see exactly what to do when working with difficult statistics. What a helpful resource!

short of my own book its the best.

It's hardly complete, but then, it would be quite difficult .. even unweildy if it had EVERYTHING that SPSS can possibly do. It hits the main topics good enough such as how to run the basic file loading and saving. How to do graphing. How to do statistics. Frankly, doing a simple chi square or T test is not that intuitive in the program and the help built into SPSS is primitive. THis book solves the problem, and that is good enough. It does not have a picture for every step of the way and it doesn't do everything SPSS can do, so, it can't be 5/5, but it would be probably impossible to get a 5/5 (unless you were using my software that pops interdimensionally).

Some Solid History & Some Silly Dogmatizing.

As Alain Silver explains in the book's Introduction, "Film Noir Reader 4" is different in purpose from the previous Film Noir Readers. It focuses on key films and key themes, rather than attempting to be inclusive or comprehensive. In that spirit, Silver has included a few lists of the most important film noirs according to himself and others in the Introduction. "Film Noir Reader 4" contains 23 mostly modern essays, many apparently not previously published, presented in two parts. The paper the book is printed on is pure white, instead of the off-white of previous volumes, so the black-and-white stills look better.

Part I, "Case Studies", includes 12 essays on key films. The films discussed are: "Double Indemnity", "Detour", "The Big Sleep", "Out of the Past", "The Unsuspected", "Gun Crazy", "D.O.A", "The Big Night", "Kiss Me Deadly", "The Big Heat", "The Big Combo", and "Touch of Evil". Glenn Erickson's enthusiastic and insightful essay "Fate Seeks the Loser: Edgar G. Ulmer's Detour" is particularly interesting. The same can be said for Kevin Hagopian's study of "The Big Sleep" and Stephen B. Armstrong's history of "Touch of Evil". Both films were radically altered by recuts, with the result of making them nonsensical. These carefully researched essays explain what was changed and why.

Part II focuses on "Noir Themes", although I don't think that most of these can reasonably be called "key" themes. Eleven essays discuss a variety of themes that can be found or projected upon classic noir films, including psychodrama, images of women, noir antecedents, horror-noir, war noirs, left-wing politics in noir and crime films, hybrid noir-westerns, and noir title sequences. In other words, Part II is a catch-all. "Cat People", "Rancho Notorious" (in comparison to "The Big Heat"), and "Double Indemnity" are discussed in the most depth.

I'm giving "Film Noir Reader 4" a lower rating than I gave the previous Film Noir Readers, because it is overwhelmed by the sort of absurd ideological readings that I haven't heard this much of since I studied film in college. The reader can't get far without running into dogmatic -and, I might add, eternally ill-defined- terminology like "patriarchal capitalism" and "misogyny". For grown persons to legitimize their socio-economic hang-ups by deliberately misrepresenting 60-year-old movies is pitiful. I am reminded of the reason director Fritz Lang left Germany: The Nazi Party liked his films so much that they offered Lang the opportunity to run the German film industry. His films were anti-fascist. Anyway, there are some good, informative, essays in "Film Noir Reader 4", and it's useful to present different interpretations. But these aren't so different, and I get the impression of scraping the bottom of the barrel.

The Persistence of Film Noir Style

This is the fourth reader in a series previously reviewed by me...I never thought the editors could find another 23 articles on "film noir," but they have successfully put together a new book organized in two parts: Case Studies and Noir Themes.

The "Case Studies" section deals with essential film noirs like DOUBLE INDEMNITY, DETOUR, THE UNSUSPECTED & TOUCH OF EVIL. The articles are written by well-respected "noir" critics; but the second section on Noir Themes is far more fascinating, especially the article by Nicolas Saada, "Noir Style in Hollywood."

There are two major errors in the text: (1) in a photo from ASPHALT JUNGLE, it is Marc Lawrence as Cobby in the background, not Anthony Caruso and in OX-BOW INCIDENT, it is Henry Morgan, not Frank who plays Art.

Otherwise, I would certainly include this book in a list of related readings in any noir course that I teach. I have taught NOIR STYLE at Columbia University and CUNY, using my own book, NOIR, NOW & THEN (Greenwood Press, 2001) as the main text and have used all the FILM NOIR READERS in my courses.

I would like to dedicated this review to Charles P. Mitchell who passed away suddenly this past January at the age of 55. He was an excellent noir scholar with a critical acumen and sense of humor that will be missed. His wife still runs their DARKER IMAGES VIDEO business in Millinocket, Maine, tracking down VHS & DVD recordings of the most elusive of noir films.

Empty Streets and Shadowy Lighting

All in all, this is a worthy collection of two dozen or so essays on empty streets, shadowy lighting, calculating women, and doomed men, otherwise known as film noir. Why these cinematic downers keep commanding the scholarly attention they get is itself a matter of curious conjecture. But they do, and there must be a readership as this fourth entry in the publishing cycle demonstrates. I was prepared to pass this one up, figuring everything that needs saying has been said. But then I'm as hooked on the Walter Neffs and Kathie Moffetts of the world as the contributors are; so here I am, 20 bucks or so poorer, but reasonably happy with the deal.

Sure, in the eyes of the beholder some essays are bound to be of lesser interest or quality than others. I myself wonder about the future of the project when it includes such diminishing returns as an essay on the trivia of title sequences, or the `noir-izing' of a technicolor western like Rancho Notorious. However, unlike reviewer Mira, I don't fault the authors for standard high-brow terminology like "capitalist patriarchy" or `misogyny"-- though I do fault the editors (not the authors) for failing to footnote such real esoterica as "diagetic" and "syntagmatic". Come on, Mira, no one picks up the fourth installment of a series like this expecting the prose level of Photoplay. Then too, Mira, just which contributors are guilty of "absurd ideological readings". You need to specify. Worse-- why are these readings "absurd'? That's a pretty strong charge, and you've got a thousand words to back it up. Otherwise, it looks like an ungrounded cheap shot, and who knows, maybe you can convince me in the process.

As two of those presumably ideological essays stand, Hodges's and Humphrey's, respectively, they make a lot of sense to me. Hodges shows how war-time noir differs from post-war noir and how these changes reflect larger national happenings, while Humphries argues that post-war noir eventually fell victim to Cold War needs and what he calls the "liberal consensus". Humphries, in particular, makes provocative and well-reasoned points for anyone with interests beyond what's there on the movie screen. And as far as that goes, I would surmise both writers, with the concerns they have, lean toward the political left ( which I suspect is what really bothers reviewer Mira). But then, the dark side of noir has long attracted those suspicious of a social order where wealth stands as the ordering principle and people lacking that are left to dangle. Anyhow, #4 stands in my book as a worthy addition to the series, and I'll likely fork over another 20 or so if there's a #5.

Shaky guesswork, suppressed citations, outright fibs & one strong idea

Author David Day has assembled 300 pages of mostly way-out-there guesses about secret allegorical patterns he believes might be hidden in the Wonderland story: chiefly the classical curriculum, with special emphasis on Greek mythology, mathematics and logic, plus a few esoteric subjects like Freemasonry, Theosophy, Rosicrucianism and Cabala. He also believes that every character and situation in Wonderland is meant to represent people and events in Oxford society. The actual physical book is very nicely designed by CS Richardson and will look lovely on any coffee table; The content is a frustrating mix consisting mostly of extremely-unpersuasive guesses - nearly always misrepresented as established facts - outright misinformation, and information which is accurate but borrowed from earlier Alice books without crediting those sources, all couched in a distasteful and unfair 'mean girl' tone.

Guesses presented as facts: On every page Day includes educated guesses which *might* be true, but he frames as statements of certainty. Examples: "The real-life Oxford White Rabbit was Alice Liddell's family physician, Dr. Henry Wentworth Acland" (quite plausible), or "many aspects of Wonderland are parodies of Plato's Republic" (extremely implausible). A good chunk of these claims are within the realm of possibility, but as Day shares no proof, nor even a citation, palming off his guesses as facts essentially amounts to outright fibbing.

Suppressed citations: Every idea in this book which I find valuable, save one, has appeared in earlier Alice books, but Day deliberately withholds citations, saying only "I cannot now even guess how many [Alice books] I have read over the last couple of decades" and providing a short list of his favorites. So if you want to follow up on a claim to learn more, Day blocks you from doing so - your only hope is to read every Alice book ever published. If you wish to learn which claims are original to Day and which he borrowed from an earlier author, Day again blocks you from learning this. In the sciences this practice is called 'suppressing citations,' and it is considered a rather underhanded attempt to steal credit for other people's work.

Misinformation: Day's factual claims are often incorrect. For example, he calls the descent of Inanna 'the oldest recorded myth in world literature' - Gilgamesh is older. Day claims that Peter Llewelyn Davis was 'the inspiration for Peter Pan' - nope; J. M. Barrie said that Davies inspired his character in name only, but the press of the time jumped on the idea, tagging Davies as 'The Original Peter Pan' - that false claim hounded him all his life, and appears to be one the primary motivations behind his suicide in 1960. Obviously it suits Day's narrative to claim that the original Alice was in the same room as the original Peter Pan, but at what point does spreading easily-corrected misinformation that led to a human being's suicide become morally not-okay?

Mean girl tone: A lot of this book, especially the final chapter, comes across as a character assassination of Lewis Carroll. To advance his not-entirely-fair narrative, Day describes Carroll's behavior after being excommunicated from the Liddell clan as "like a jilted lover"; well, maybe - why not tell his readers which facts he's referring to and let us draw conclusions ourselves, rather than simply stating his conclusion, withholding the facts on which those conclusions are based, and tacitly insisting that we take his conclusions on trust? (After 300 pages of showing himself to be at least sporadically untrustworthy.) Day accuses Dodgson of hypocrisy for chasing celebrities, then bridling after he became famous himself and was approached by fans - but anyone who's read a single book on Dodgson knows his objection was not to celebrity-seekers, but to anyone who insisted on identifying him as Lewis Carroll after he had gone to extreme lengths to keep his pseudonym private (Google J.K. Rowling/Robert Galbraith to learn how profound a betrayal this can be). One could easily make a case that Carroll ultimately became ingracious in his political disputes with Dean Liddell, but Day's suggestion that Carroll was profoundly immoral simply for disagreeing with his powerful boss comes across as grossly unfair - he seems to have mistaken oligarchic authoritarianism for morality.

Extremely dubious guesses: Most of Day's apparently-original theories are of this level of quality - he suggests that 'Orange Marmalade' is meant as an anagram for 'Am Analog Dreamer.' I suspect that most readers will find this unpersuasive. The only section of this book I found entirely convincing, though hardly original to Day, is the suggestion that Carroll may have filled his story with reductio ad absurdum situations in imitation of Zeno - this is not a difficult claim to support, as Carroll identified Zeno as his favorite philosopher, wrote a variation of Zeno's race between the Tortoise and Achilles, and explicitly wrote that reductio ad absurdum scenes were his favorite type of story in the introduction to 'Sylvie and Bruno.' Most of the math patterns Day suggests seem wildly far-fetched to me, though I am not a mathematician and perhaps they are simply over my head. Day's single biggest allegorical focus is the descent of the goddess motif, especially Persephone from Greek myth - this is not impossible (Carroll did once compare the Queen of Hearts to a 'blind and aimless Fury'), but I just don't see it. As a lifelong reader of books about Alice, the one idea here that grabbed my attention is the possibility that Carroll may have intended an allegorical parallel between the rose garden of spiritual enlightenment from Cabala (set around a fountain) and the rose garden with 'cool fountains' which Alice spends the first half of the book trying to reach; there's no absolute proof, but we know from his diaries that Carroll attended Masonic events, Freemasonry builds on Cabala, and the connection seems striking.

This book is so visually-pleasing that some readers might want it simply as an art object. We know from Carroll's surviving writings that there really are at least a handful of allegorical references to Oxford society and logic in the Alice books, and it's a good bet there are other allegorical bits in the stew. The best possible use of this book would be to whet the readers' appetite to learn more from Alice books which are perhaps a bit more level-headed and authoritative, in particular the fantastic annotated edition by Martin Gardner.

Hidden connections, references, and meanings in Alice in Wonderland in a smart coffee table book

I have long been a fan of AIW and for years my favorite reference has been the various incarnations of Martin Gardner's Annotated Alice - it is now my second favorite, surpassed by David Day's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland Decoded. In October in NYC the Lewis Carroll Society of North America sponsored a number of events celebrating the 150th anniversary of the publication of Alice. At one of the venues I met David Day and purchased his massive, beautifully illustrated labor of love and scholarship with many new theories about the hidden meanings and implied references contained within AIW and Carroll's conscious/unconscious intentions in writing it. Day draws from multiple sources, especially classical sources so familiar to Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, and proposes multiple connections to themes and characters, some of which have been explored by previous scholars but many new and even controversial. If you think that AIW is just a beloved children's story, purchase this book and be prepared to take your own journey down the rabbit hole to discover a wonderland of new connections and symbolic meanings.

What an adventure, Thank you David Day for all your hard work - I first heard your interview on Australian radio and said I must get that book. Many of us these days lack a REAL education (classical that is) and need this insight to fill in the blanks. Wonderful, Amazing!
