Alpha Male Cop with Attitude

If domestic discipline is your thing, then try this book, the writing is great and the story is interesting

In truth I am conflicted about Her Keeper 1-4. Helen Karol is a great writer, and I thought I would enjoy the premise of the story, however once I delved into the series I struggled with the dynamic of Rick and Sara's relationship. Just too much domestic discipline for me :D

The author explores the emerging emotions cleverly weaving the story between each protagonists point of view told in first person accounts and unfolding present events and past histories with skill.

I am not generally keen on stories told in the first person, but Helen Karol's gift for writing made the words flow and I was quickly caught up in both Rick and Sara's perspectives.

I guess where the book failed me, is that I read kink to be turned on, and whilst I have no problem reading all flavours of BDSM and D/s (both M/F and M/M), I think my personal preferences must lie outside domestic discipline because it just didn't work for me.

I really did not appreciate Rick's endearment to Sara of 'little girl'. Her endearment for Rick of 'jackass' on the other hand seemed much more appropriate. I guess this sums up my struggle to enjoy the story, I found Rick to be too overbearing and frankly a bully. Admittedly one person's bully is another's alpha male and my views are clearly in a minority,

I was given a copy of this in exchange for an honest review.

If was ever a person who needed a spanking its Prosecuting Attorney Sara Michaels. Strong willed, opinionated, button pushing, name calling bundle of woman wrapped up in a body that could make a man fall to his knees.

Well unless the man is Detective Rick Andrews. Sara and Rick have this love hate relationship, well actually their fighting has become the stuff of legends in Lake Andrews. The reason behind the feud goes back to their time in college when Rick humiliated Sara in front of a bunch of frat buddies by spanking her when she ran into his parked car with her bike.

The book reads like a broadway play. As each chapter unfolds the cast of characters keeps you on the edge of your seat, waiting for the curtain to rise. Ms. Karol has created characters that will keep you enthralled, entertained, and begging for more.

This is a book about a Dom who believes in the adage spare the rod spoil the woman. His firm belief is that a 24/7 D/s full discipline relationship is the only type of honest relationship for him. He has wanted to spank Sara's behind for a lot of years, to protect her from herself, to give her pleasure mixed with pain, and to teach her a lesson. Sara has hidden desires for Rick, and has dabbled in the BDSM kink but with little success. Enter Mister tall dark and dominant and you have a best seller on your hands.

Book 1 just wets your appetite, believe me I know. I had to go and get the other 3 parts, I couldn't let the story go.

Luke Kincaid, former partner of Raisa Gordon, reappears as the best friend of Rick Andrews, the alpha male Detective of a small town in New Hampshire on Lake Andrews, named for his family who have live there more than two centuries. Sara Michaels is the town prosecutor, granddaughter of another town founding father and daughter of missionary parents, on a mission of her own going head to head with the town's leading company for the improprieties. Friends in common, careers intermingled, yet these two are at odds constantly because resentments, desires and fears run deep, eight years deep. These two literally collided in college and the rift and undercurrent has been strong between them ever since. This is the first part of the serial and I look forward to see where it goes. Will Sara let her resentment for Rick and public humiliation go? Will Rick give in and explore with Sara? Sara is reckless and this raises Rick's hackles and the alpha male emerges. The only question is, will it all blow up or blossom? This first installment in the serial proves to be some good reading, bound to be filled with twists, for sure.

As with Lakdawala's other books, this is a very enjoyable read. It is easy to follow, leaves you with a smile on your face, and a keen sense that you know exactly what is going on with Lakdawala there to guide you. Once you have worked your way through the book, you are left with the confidence to play the opening and the suggested lines.� Even though I possibly should know better, I am beginning to feel like a sucker for enjoying Lakdawala's books so much. If I were a young player looking to improve my game and understand an opening, I would most likely be picking up his books at the same pace people buy overpriced candy and popcorn at the movie theater, though these books last a lot longer and you do not end up feeling guilty afterward.

Cyrus Lakdawala is an International Master, a former National Open and American Open Champion, and a six-time State Champion. He has been teaching chess for over 30 years, and coaches some of the top junior players in the US.

Good but confusing at times

My chess rating runs around 2100. I used to play the Colle and was interested in the new improvements since then.

Lakdawala has written a VERY entertaining book on an opening he plays regularly.

I really like the way he presents the opening. However, most of these are white-to-play-this-and-win plus a positive thinking pep talk (salted with interesting and often funny [to me] metaphors). In other words, Lakdawala does not present a critical analysis of the opening, instead it's a defense. However, there are glimmers of how Black could change the course of the game with different moves, move orders, and ideas. Not all the games are at the GM level and a computer is mentioned often (despite the introduction ranting against computer analysis and needing a computer proof opening that computers and theory will not dismantle).

Typically when I lean a new opening it's helpful to follow the main lines so the confusing thing is the format (which can interfere with they way I process chess information). Typically the format, inserting questions (mostly useful) adds to the sense of understanding. The problem is that there are times when the diagrams and the questions are off the main line. The feeling is one of having to go back to decipher what he's talking about.

I do like the fact that most "average" player should be able to follow the lines due to the abundance of diagrams.

Please note, despite the 416 pages, there is less on the Colle than I had hoped for... a good percentage of the book is Lakdawala entertaining us with his sense of humor. (e.g. his dog eating grass and ceremonially vomiting it up) This book is not encyclopedic which is good for the new learner and not so good for those who may already have a good sense of the opening and want more depth.

Another thing that should be understood, this is an introduction to the whole Colle complex. It covers the traditional idea of playing for e4, or the new so-called Phoenix idea of playing a reversed Slav with b4, or the "brutal" (Ladawala) Zukertort system. In other words, after reading this book you will need to head for one of the books that specialize in one of these lines.

While the Colle is essential a "one-trick" pony (if it doesn't work then white is in trouble), it is a very good and reliable trick that new players have used effectively to stay out of early trouble against superior players. (The London, played well is considered "unbeatable" while the Colle is open to debate.)

The reason this book scores so high (for me) is because it also happens to be a tactical manual. Ladawala refers to the various attacking motifs and how to look for and combine them. Some of them are advanced ideas and the newer player may have to search the meaning of some of the ideas mentioned. Still it's a good attacking manual.

So if you are fairly versed in chess, looking for a solid opening with explosive attacking potential over the board, and are willing to learn a sense of timing of when something big should happen... give this book a read.

You will want to play the Colle when you are done with this book!

Well written. Fun, which is not typical of chess books. Author shows how the basic pawn structures can arise out of a variety of move orders. I don't use the Colle as a primary opening anymore, but it can really throw an opponent in certain move orders. I'm looking forward to using it a little more now!

Good Opening Book for Players who Want to Avoid Sharp Dangerous Openings

I started buying Cyrus' books because he used to be my chess coach about 25 years ago. I like his Colle book because most of the players in New Mexico are not used to this system which means they are likely to misplay the opening. As an older player, I'm over sixty now, I needed a opening repertoire that was more positional and less tactical. It's like a golfer that has to adjust his swing as he gets older so that he can still compete against the younger players. All of his opening books fit the bill in that respect. I would recommend his books to anyone who wants or needs to transition from sharp tactical lines to positional chess.

I wish that I had never picked it up!

My mother introduced me to Rebecca when I was twelve. I've adored the book ever since. I never wanted the book to end, and longed to know what happened to the characters after the tragic fire at Manderly. I was so excited to pick up Mrs. DeWinter. Two chapters into the book, I knew that I had made a dreadful mistake. I felt an obligation to finish the book, and I did. Ms. Hill causes readers to loathe Maxim, to think of him as a boorish lout. The second Mrs. DeWinter reads as flat, neurotic and weak. If I could erase this book from my memory I would. It is a disgrace to the original.

Competently written, but overall a huge disappointment.

The second Mrs. de Winter narrates this book, as she did Daphne du Maurier's classic REBECCA, to which it professes itself the sequel. She remains otherwise nameless, and through the first half of this novel sounds very much like herself. Author Hill has du Maurier's style down cold, in fact. In that respect I was very pleased.

The novel's second half, on the other hand, kept me reading almost solely for the beauty of the writing. As Maxim de Winter and his second wife make a permanent return to England, after 10 years in voluntary exile, the characters regress alarmingly and infuriatingly. Mrs. de Winter loses all the growth she attained during the first book's events, and during her years in exile. Maxim loses the wonderful complexity that made him such an intriguing hero. Was the point to get rid of the du Maurier book's moral ambiguity? If so, Hill accomplishes this quite nicely. She has her heroine tell us repeatedly that "we make our own destiny," and she sees to it that wrong is punished in proper black-and-white terms. By the time she's through, the characters who seemed so real precisely because they had as many dimensions as flesh-and-blood people have been rendered simple, manageable, understandable...and boring.

Competently written, but overall a huge disappointment.

Not for everyone

This book is definitely not for everyone, especially those who want to keep Maxim and his nameless wife where they left them, in some anonymous foreign country. However, if you're interested in more of a psychological, interior story you might enjoy this book. Yes, Nameless (the 2nd Mrs. deWinter) is neurotic; of course she is, she's living with an emotionally detached murderer far from her home country. She has no one to speak to re her worries, so she has a constant conversation with herself. And the conversation has advanced to the point where she is beginning to understand what she has sacrificed for Maxim. She sees how other men are with their wives, she longs for England, she's maturing - no longer content to be Nameless and nursemaid to a narcissist (sorry, but he is, I loved him, too).

So, if you prefer to leave them where duMarier left them, that's fine. But if you are comfortable with a not-so-happy sequel, this is at least well-written and beautifully atmospheric, which Susan Hill does very well.

She has published numerous articles, reviews, and chapters on contemporary drama, especially modern British drama and the work of Caryl Churchill. She has received several grants and awards for research into current teaching technologies, and is at work on a study of drama and theatre pedagogy.�Beverly Lawn (PD, SUNY-Stony Brook), Professor of English Emerita, taught introductory fiction courses at Adelphi University for almost three decades. She is editor or coeditor several literature anthologies, including Literature: A Portable Anthology, and is also the author of Throat of Feathers, a book of poems.�Jack Ridl is Professor Emeritus of English at Hope College where he taught courses in literature, essay writing, poetry writing, and the nature of poetry for thirty-five years. He has published six volumes of poetry and more than two hundred poems in some fifty literary magazines; his most recent collection, Broken Symmetry, was selected by the Society of Midland Authors as one of the two best volumes of poetry published in 2006. His chapbook Against Elegies received the 2001 Letterpress Award from the Center for Book Arts. His recognitions for teaching excellence include the Hope Outstanding Professor-Educator award at Hope College for 1976, the Michigan Teacher of the Year award from the Carnegie Foundation in 1996, and the Favorite Faculty/Staff Member award at Hope College in 2003. For Bedford/St. Martin’s, with Peter Schakel he coedited Approaching Poetry (1997) and 250 Poems (2003); and he is coeditor with Janet Gardner, Beverley Lawn, and Peter Schakel of Literature: a Portable Anthology (2004).�Peter Schakel, Peter C. and Emajean Cook Professor of English at Hope College, has published numerous scholarly and pedagogical studies on Jonathan Swift and C. S. Lewis; with Jack Ridl, he has coedited Approaching Poetry (Bedford/St. Martin's, 1997) and Approaching Literature (Second Edition, Bedford/St. Martin's, 2008).

Excellent!

Easily the BEST English text book I've had. The short stories are actually interesting, and many of them are classics. What I like most though, is that the book dispels the myth of "hidden meaning". English isn't about finding some hidden meaning in a text because for the most part hidden meanings don't exist. Instead, it asks you to create you own meaning/argument and teaches you how to support that with the written text.

Writing about Literature is the last section

I was very upset that I bought this book along with Reading and Writing About Literature: A Portable Guide....The entire portable guide makes up the last chapter of this book. However, Amazon made it so easy to return the smaller book that I must give their Customer Service a FIVE. For now, this book gets a four....when I'm done reading it, I will consider changing my rating. I like the parts that I've read thus far.
