About the Author
Stacy London is the cohost of TLC’s What Not to Wear and has a regular segment on NBC’s Today show called “Ask Stacy.” She’s the cofounder and stylist in chief of Style for Hire. In addition, she has appeared on numerous TV programs, including Oprah, Wendy Williams, and Access Hollywood. A contributing editor at People magazine, she previously worked at Vogue and Mademoiselle.

Best Style Book of the Year!

This book is fantastic! It's personal, visually rich and emotionally satisfying. The author, Stacy London, takes nine women of different ages, sizes and ethnicities and radically transforms their appearances. However, they don't just dress better; they all seem to glow - as if they'd discovered something amazing about themselves.

The most striking transformation is that of a 57-year-old executive from Silicon Valley who looks like a mature tech nerd. Initially, she is wearing mom jeans, a saggy cardigan and has a platinum mullet. By the end of her chapter, though, she is drop-dead gorgeous! She looks so chic in a velvet suit, bold jewelry and a modern short haircut. (She also looks about forty pounds lighter just by dressing differently.)

The author works with all different clothing budgets, too. The Silicon Valley womn is steered toward designer suits while in the 19-year-old UT student's makeover shot, she's wearing straight-leg jeans, a fitted blazer and edgy boots. There's also a plus-size African American woman who goes from frumpy to chic. Then, a breast cancer survivor has a whole different set of specific body issues, so she comes to look sexy, feminine and comfortable. There's also a tiny (4'11") 26-year-old who goes from wispy and faded to having a real presence, a zing; her hair color also changes to a deeper, richer tone which really brings out her facial features.

One chapter transforms a plus-size 39-year-old who is trapped in Mommy Syndrome - subsuming herself in her family - and dressing only in black. The author pulls her from her black clothing doldrums into a tailored career mom look. Another participant has issues with her extreme height. She's 5'11" and curvy, yet she almost fades into her "before" photo background. She absolutely comes alive with fitted, colorful clothing and a good haircut. Then, there's the Missouri redhead who also retreats into all black. The author styled her, so her delicate features shined. Finally, there's a cute 48-year-old divorcee who is ready to jump back into the dating pool, but first must overcome her addiction to blah-black and wrap herself in colors that really flatter her and make her look about fifteen years younger.

While the tone of this book is similar to Stacy London's approach on her TV show, "What Not to Wear," this book adds something more. There's a gentleness and a depth. Stacy shares her own early struggles with psoriasis, a visible chronic skin condition, which makes it easy to understand how she oozes empathy for so many other women and their struggles with self-perception and style. This book feels luxurious; the pages are glossy, the pictures abound, there's so much depth and careful analysis that one can reread at will so as to understand the approach to each style situation. The actual layout - fonts, insets - are so visually pleasing, too.
This is a must-have book for any woman who wants to be true to herself and her style!

Everything you love about Stacy London and then some

At 25, I've been shifting my style to crossover more between home and the office - I like to think of my style as "polished casual" but I was feeling a little lost in terms of finding things that flatter my shape while still being stylish and not busting my budget. I have watched WNTW for years and love it so I didn't hesitate in buying Stacy's book. What surprised me most about this was the insight Stacy gave into her own style journey and life. She shares some very personal things here and I really enjoyed learning more about her back story. You'll find everything you love about Stacy in this book and then some. The writing style is fun and authentic and there are great visuals to go along with each story. While I couldn't relate to each and every woman in the book, I did find several I really identified with and picked up some great tid bits from the other. This is a book I'll always keep around to go back to when I'm feeling lost style wise. A great purchase!

Great book, great tips, great insight

I have always been a fan of WNTW, and when I saw Stacy talking about this book on Anderson Cooper, I ordered it right away. The book covers the style and fit problems of a variety of women - all different ages, shapes, and sizes - and includes some little bits of info about Stacy's own life. It's easy for a skinny woman to tell a fat woman what she looks good in, but the advice becomes 100x more valuable once you find out that skinny woman once WAS a fat girl, and knows the fit issues you're facing.

Decent but simplified and has some typos

My Teacher (Roosevelt University Masters Graduate in Viola Performance) has found typos in the music and alterations that, although make the music easier to play, are inaccurate. I am OK with changes to make it easier as I am a student myself, but there are no citations of doing so. I would respect that in a work like this.

Best alto-clef solo material ever -- good mandola material!

The Bach Cello suites are my favorite baroque pieces. They're a bit beyond my reach on the viola, but easier and sound amazing on mandola.

These suites are fairly geometric and serve as good etudes, especially for string crossings. Your housemates will appreciate hearing these suites as an alternative to more-repetitive exercises, too. As far as studies, the suites don't cover all keys. There are enough in G and C major to get an intermediate started, but much of the material is in C minor, which I find a stretch on my fingers. The book starts easily (with the most famous prelude) and ends with challenging pieces, at least for me.

This book is a lot of fun and is packed with loads of Bach-sms.

Buy a different edition

Several bars missing from many of the pieces, as he who did the transposition passed away in the middle of it. For some reason they still chose to publish it.

I suggest a different edition.

Wrong edition for DAT Prep

The book is great and covers everything well, but it's not the edition you want to use if your studying the DAT. I made the mistake of buying this edition when I should have gotten the 3rd edition, which is why I feel it would be unfair to deduct more than one star.

Caveat emptor!
There are some major differences between the 3rd and 4th editions, because of a change in HS curriculums. That being said...
Here are some examples between the two editions:

Chapter 6 (Cell signaling pathways) in the 4th edition is not in the 3rd and not necessary for the DAT. The 4th edition is way too in depth for some materials and isn't necessary for the DAT (e.g. Chapter 9 Molecular Biology and a history of the experiments that lead to the discovery of DNA).

Most importantly, the 4th edition skips some of the subjects that were in the 3rd edition, subjects that will show up on the DAT.

TLDR: If you're preparing for the DAT, newer is not necessarily better. Stick to Cliff AP 3rd edition.

Did not help!

I purchased this book because I heard that reading Cliffs-notes is the best way to earn a 5. I loved it because I was able to comprehend and retain a large amount of information. It provides a detailed answer-key to all the questions it asks, so I gained a lot of knowledge from it. I thought I had a chance of getting an amazing score on my AP Exam, but I was so wrong!

The AP Biology exam doesn't ask you to define vocabulary or explain the processes your teacher emphasized on. It is the complete OPPOSITE of straight-forward. You have to observe diagrams, analyze complex situations, and find hypotheses to experiments you've never even heard of. You have to read long, boring paragraphs that contain a lot of "beating around the bush." It seemed as if this book only gave me background knowledge, because I wasn't able to answer more than 10 questions based off of what I learned from this book. It did, however, help me on the free response questions which was the easiest part of the exam.

In conclusion, this is an excellent book, but don't depend on it to earn a good grade on the exam, because it will not help you. Use it to understand topics you don't understand throughout the year. This book probably would've been a life-saver for people on the old exams, but now College Board has their "new & improved" crap, I hope I even pass the exam. Cliffsnotes needs to come up with a new edition if they REALLY want to prepare their customers for the newly designed test.

Informative, but in essence, not helpful for the AP exam they gave this year

Ok, so I took the new AP Biology exam in May. I used this book to study from, did all the questions at the end of the chapters including the free response, and I have to say that although this book was extremely informative and helpful for my classroom tests, it was very unlike the test itself. The test was very conceptual, containing a lot of diagrams which required analysis and paragraphs that had to be read to answer follow-up questions. In essence, the review book just gave me some background knowledge for the test's somewhat abstract questions, and I really wasn't expecting that. The book itself though is really good at providing the reader with information, but not as successful at preparing you for the test's format. It's understandable though, since this was the first year that they changed the test, so definitely keep that in mind. Otherwise, if you want something else to study for the AP exam, I would recommend this book as a class study guide since it was so good at explaining topics for tests you might have.

Excellent and comprehensive

I took Ted Sider's class at NYU, for which we used this book as the text. It is really an excellent intro to logic -- accessible without scrimping on technical details. It is also very comprehensive for a single-volume logic intro, covering many of the varieties of logic that are found in contemporary analytic philosophy.

Some caveats: firstly, this book is indeed an "intro" to some less-than-standard logics, but it is not an "intro" generally, and it really falls more squarely in the category of "intermediate" difficulty (filling a rather gaping hole in the available literature, between bare introduction and technical jungle). Readers looking for a purely beginning introduction to formal logic should look elsewhere (there is an abundance of good material at that level). Secondly, the purpose of the book is quite clearly to provide the technical equipment required for a working knowledge of certain logic-heavy areas of philosophy, and this book is not aimed particularly toward, say, mathematicians. That said, as an overview aimed at providing a solid groundwork for understanding the many flavors of logic one encounters in philosophical writing, it is probably the best book you can get, in my humble opinion. A solid second-place goes to that two-volume series by LTF Gamut, which is also quite widely available, and shares many of the same merits as this.

Too much and too little

First let me say that the writing in this book is terrifically clear. The presentation of logical material is really good and the author hits all the right notes in the philosophical asides that show up now and again. Depending on your background this book could be a worthwhile read. So why only three stars? My complaint is that this book is superfluous. Let me explain. The aim of this book is to provide an introduction to more advanced topics in logic, especially those that are of interest to philosophers. As such the book covers a tremendous amount of material including some basic metalogic for propositional and predicate logic, modal propositional logic, quantified modal logic, tense logic, deontic logic, three valued-logic, intuitionistic logic... you get the picture. And it manages all this in a rather skimpy 280 pages. As a result the coverage of each of these topics is very cursory. This means that, to my mind, any student who wants to really understand any of these topics is going to have to read some more thoroughly presented material anyway. So why not just read the thorough material in the first place, rather than this book. The flip-side of this problem is that the book is not particularly introductory. That is to say, if you can read Sider's book and understand it, you can probably read and understand many of the other logic texts out there. So, though the book is supposed to be an introduction to advanced logic, it is neither sufficiently introductory to justify its brevity, nor sufficiently detailed to justify its advanced presentation.

Covers all the major topics

We used this text for our advanced logic class, and like all logic books there is a good, a bad, and an ugly. First the good. Sider is an awesome writer; every chapter begins with a wonderfully clear exposition of each topic in philosophical logic. I was especially impressed by his chapter on counterfactuals; every student of those strange conditionals should start here rather than with Lewis or Stalnaker (move on to those guys after reading this!). The bad: like most logicians, Sider assumes the notation he is using will be intuitive to the reader--it is not. I doubt I could have grasped the subtleties of his method, which he repeats in every chapter, without the aid of a professor. The ugly: there are some egregious typos, one which comes to mind is on page 61 where he is proving a major rule of inference (he leaves off a negation sign).

The great thing about this book is that it covers all the major topics of deductive logic one finds in technical analytic philosophy, and it is helpful to survey if one needs a refresher on whatever one is studying at the moment. While I continue to believe there is no such thing as a good logic text book, I do think Sider's is worth owning as it can be referenced easily whenever one has a question about this or that aspect of first and second order logic.

Probability theory is an actively developing branch of mathematics. It has applications in many areas of science and technology and forms the basis of mathematical statistics. This self-contained, comprehensive book tackles the principal problems and advanced questions of probability theory and random processes in 22 chapters, presented in a logical order but also suitable for dipping into. They include both classical and more recent results, such as large deviations theory, factorization identities, information theory, stochastic recursive sequences. The book is further distinguished by the inclusion of clear and illustrative proofs of the fundamental results that comprise many methodological improvements aimed at simplifying the arguments and making them more transparent.

The importance of the Russian school in the development of probability theory has long been recognized. This book is the translation of the fifth edition of the highly successful and esteemed Russian textbook. This edition includes a number of new sections, such as a new chapter on large deviation theory for random walks, which are of both theoretical and applied interest. The frequent references to Russian literature throughout this work lend a fresh dimension and makes it an invaluable source of reference for Western researchers and advanced students in probability related subjects.

About the Author

Professor Alexandr Borovkov lives and works in the Novosibirsk Academy Town in Russia and is affiliated with both the Sobolev Institute of Mathematics of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Novosibirsk State University. He is one of the most prominent Russian specialists in probability theory and mathematical statistics. Alexandr Borovkov authored and co-authored more than 200 research papers and ten research monographs and advanced level university textbooks. His contributions to mathematics and its applications are widely recognized, which included election to the Russian Academy of Sciences and several prestigious awards for his research and textbooks.

An excellent graduate course in probability

(This review is based on the second Russian edition printed in 1986. The contents of English edition seems to be a bit extended version of the Russian one.)
This is a very good exposition to probability theory at the professional level. I like it much more than I do Billingsley's "Probability and Measure" (which is a collection of essays on probability theory, sometimes only vaguely related a few chapters apart from each other, while Borovkov is a very consistent course which has the same level of rigor as Billingsley does, and which also proves some subtle but appreciable things not mentioned in Billingsley). It has a bit different flavor of tending to prove things via characteristic functions rather than directly with the cesnored random variables as in Billinsley's book. It does not cover as much measure theory as Billingsley does, and I suspect that the book implicitly assumes the student to be familiar with a standard Russian reference on functional analysis by Kolmogorov and Fomin that has an extensive treatment of Lebesgue integration. It is also nice that it has a lot of examples discussed in the text (rather than given as exercises) that help to cement the concepts. They make the text quite lively, too. Sometimes I had to spend a minute or two thinking why they believe a statement in a proof is self-evident, though.
The book starts with with the introduction of probability spaces, goes on to random variables, then to the laws of large numbers, convergence notions, and the CLTs. It also discusses renewal theory, factorization identities, Markov chains, information and entropy, martingales, continuous time stocastic processes, functional limit theorems, and Markov processes, with some measure theory stuff and a couple of more difficult theorems (extension of a measure, Kolmogorov theorem on consistent distributions, theorems of Helly and Arcela--Ascoli) given in appendices. Thus it covers more than a semester of probability theory, giving some initial reading for some four or so advanced courses. The author suggests to use the bulk of the material in the first ten or twelve chapters for a required semester course, with the rest of the book viewed as the material for shorter elective courses. The book helped me greatly in my probability theory comprehensive exam, as well as in my stochastic calculus and stochastic processes courses.
It is a pity that the book is rather expensive -- I am happy to have it in the original language on which this review is actually based.
Of historical interest it is that A.Borovkov is Kolmogorov's student.

This is an excellent resource for those in medical settings.

The authors suggest another method of evaluating ethical dilemmas. They suggest one examine the situation in light of medical indications, patient preferences, quality of life, and contextual features.

Because the approach is clinical, rather than theoretical, some of the medical details presented are somewhat technical. This is a book for those working in a medical setting or otherwise engaged with medical ethics.

I read the book based on the recommendation of a bioethics lecturer. It was further recommended recently by the Director of the Program in Medical Ethics for University of California, Irvine.

Concise, yet comprehensive sytematic approach to bioethics

Dr. Jonsen is one the nation's germinal thinkers in the field of bioethics. Through his experience and associations at several of the renowned medical academic institutions in this coutnry he sets forth a clear systematic approach to problems in bioethics. This includes a review of his "4-box" method for approaching ethical problems and then reviews basic ethical principles as well as legal definitions. His approach to clincal dilemmas provides a refreshing analytical process for dilineating issues and conflicts.

Mark Bittman’s Creamy Navy Bean and Squash Gratin with Bits of Sausage from The Food Matters Cookbook

I cook for the holidays the traditional way, though my definition of "traditional" might not be the same as yours. For me, "traditional" means going to the market, picking out what looks good and fresh, and ignoring the rest. It means starting with fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and beans and using meat as a seasoning or garnish, the way our ancestors did. It means looking to other people's culinary heritages for ingredients and seasonings—things like real Parmesan cheese, smoked Spanish paprika, or Thai fish sauce—that make the dishes I grew up with more interesting and exciting.

Makes 4 servings
Time: 1 1/2 hours with cooked or canned beans, largely unattended

Ingredients

4 ounces Italian sausage, casings removed, optional
1/4 cup half-and-half or cream
1 tablespoon chopped fresh rosemary, or 1 teaspoon dried
3 cups cooked or canned navy beans, drained, liquid reserved
Salt and black pepper
1 small butternut squash, peeled and seeded
1/2 cup vegetable stock or water, or more as needed
3 tablespoons olive oil
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese, optional

Instructions

Heat the oven to 325�F. If you’re using the sausage, put a small skillet over medium-high heat. When it’s hot, add the sausage and cook, stirring to break it into small pieces, for 5 to 10 minutes; don’t brown it too much. (If you’re not using the sausage, skip to Step 2.)

Combine the half-and-half, rosemary, and beans in a 2-quart baking dish; sprinkle with salt and pepper. Tuck the crumbled sausage (if you’re using it) into the beans.

Cut the butternut squash halves into thin slices. Spread the slices out on top of the beans, overlapping a bit; press down gently. Pour the stock over the top, drizzle with the oil, and sprinkle with more salt and pepper.

Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove the foil and continue baking until the top is browned and glazed, another 45 minutes or so. Add a little more stock if the mixture seems too dry. And sprinkle the top with the Parmesan if you’re using it for the last 10 minutes of cooking. Serve immediately or at room temperature.

So far, fantastic!

One day with the book, and I've made 3 recipes already and shopped for groceries to make several more. It's very encouraging and the 3 dishes I've made have blown me (and my picky housemates) away.

Breakfast: I tried the Anadama Waffles (p. 283). The flavor came out very hearty, wheat-y and otherwise ok. The texture was good and the flavor made a great base for what you typically put on a waffle. So I was happy and I'd make them again, although I might try another recipe before coming back.

Dinner: Corn and Sweet Potato Chowder with Chipotle. Amazing. I don't like veggie soup and I don't like corn chowder. My housemates don't like sweet potato or overly spicy foods in their respective peculiarities. However, we all love this dish so much that we had a little politeness war over who would have priority on the leftovers :) It's sweet and spicy and I'd make it again. This all coming from a household that loves pork pozolle!

Desert: I cheated a little. In his other book (the one with narrative and recipes), there's a nice recipe for fruit sorbet. I used chocolate and black cherry as the base and it turned out fantastic.

About the book in general:

I'm excited about the recipes I see and encouraged because I know they were built for healthy and responsible living. We'll just have to wait and see if we all magically lose weight.

The layout of the book is visually what you would expect. Information for prep time and yield is available and interesting descriptions appear above each recipe to tell you the background or whet your appetite and set your expectations.

The pages are white which makes the text much brighter than his big-red-book. Also, the pages properly lay open, even in the front and back of the book, without the need to hold the thing open (which would be cumbersome while cooking - I only mention it because some books are very good at closing themselves).

The recipes were clear and easy enough to follow as I've come to expect of Bittman. So far the taste has been great although I can't speak for the whole book as I haven't been through all of it!

Drawbacks:

1. No calorie counts. I know, he isn't about calorie counts and it'd have taken a lot of time and money to do that for each of 500 dishes, but I still hoped it would be there. Not a deal breaker.

2. There is no single list of the recipes in the book or each section. Many other cookbooks I own have a list of recipes in the front of the book or each section and this one doesn't which is a little annoying for meal planning purposes. There *are*, however, 3 lists in the back of the book for 'Fast Recipes', 'Make-Ahead Recipes', and 'Recipes for Pantry Staples'. So at least I have those.

I'll continue to cook my way through this and let you know what I find in an update, but right now I'm thrilled with my purchase and would recommend this book to anyone.

UPDATE: I'm adding a couple photos of things I've made so far. Just snaps from my kitchen, so don't expect studio quality ;)

UPDATE 2: Within a week or two I'll probably add more details about other recipes I've tried. It's still going great, but I wanted to add a comparison for reference. Yesterday I was making a recipe from a recent weight watchers cookbook. In the past, I've found their recipes to be light and tasty, though sometimes a little weird. However, after spending a while eating this plant-heavy food, I was honestly a bit sickened when cooking one of the weight watchers cookbook's chicken recipes. It's funny, but I just felt like it had way too much meat, sugar and fat. I guess it's a good thing, but now I'm a little concerned I won't enjoy a juicy steak dinner ;)

A nice step forward

I am thoroughly enjoying this book. This is not a "health-food" cookbook. It simply looks at food through a slightly different lens, such that the emphasis is placed on fruits and vegetables, not meats and dairy. There is still plenty of meat and dairy for those of us who find meat and dairy quite satisfying.

We've been moving toward this kind of diet for some time now. I've lost 25 pounds over the last year by eating this way and by exercising. My blood pressure is at a record low, and my doctor is thrilled with the changes. However, while I'm a pretty decent home cook, I am not the most imaginative cook in the world; this book has given me plenty of fresh ideas.

We have tried enough recipes with success that I feel comfortable recommending this book to others. It's simple food, and my always-skeptical sweetheart has been cleaning his plate. It doesn't matter how healthy it is if they won't eat it.

I think this is a strong addition to any cookbook collection.

Edited 12/25/10: I just wanted to add that I've been using this cookbook for over two months now, and I still find it immensely useful and use it regularly. We've considered tweaking a recipe here or there, which is normal for us. Even though we had already been moving toward this kind of diet, we've made even bigger strides over the last two months. It was a bit of a surprise when we went grocery shopping for Christmas dinner and ended up with cart almost exclusively full of vegetables with half a turkey breast and nearly no simple carbs or processed foods. It's becoming more and more natural for us to eat this way, even on special occasions.

Bittmanesque healthy recipes

Another in Mark Bittman's corpus of work. I have always enjoyed his cookbooks, and I have incorporated a number of his recipes into my cooking "cycle." This book focuses on healthier dishes. Early on, he notes (Page ix): "If you swap the basic proportions in your diet--increasing unprocessed fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, and whole grains--you'll wind up losing your weight and improving your overall health. . . ."

One thing that he aims to do in this cookbook is to reduce the percentage of calories coming from animal based food or highly processed food. The recipes come in several categories here: appetizers and snacks, soups, salads and dressings, pasta (and noodles and dumplings), rice and grains, beans, vegetables, bread (and pizza and sandwiches and wraps), and desserts and sweet snacks.

While Bittman's recipes cut the amount of meat, he does not present us with a vegetarian/Vegan cookbook. There is a provision of meat or seafood or poultry in a number of the recipes.

Some illustrative recipes: Cucumber-wasabi tea sandwiches; Olives, cucumbers, and tuna, Mediterranean style; Mini potato-parmesan rostis; Provencal soup (a play on ratatouille); Mushroom stew with beef chunks; Smashed potato salad with escarole; Thai beef salad; Pasta with asparagus, bacon, and egg (Odd, but yummy!); Black bean chili mac; Vegetable and shrimp fried rice; Chickpea tagine with chicken and bulgur; Scrambled tomatoes and herbs (easy and tasty); Grilled turkey hash with red wine glaze; Grilled tomato sandwich, with or without cheese.

All in all, an interesting cookbook if you wish to improve the quality of your diet. Recipes are doable. Some seem to me to be fairly bland. But it is a tradeoff--health versus our acquired taste for highly processed food and too much meat.
