Overpriced.
By Kay Jacobs
Authors' commentary is fantastic as throughout the entire textbook (if not long-winded)...but Crazy overpriced for the size that contains a few cases, especially considering the text itself is a few hundred.. If you want to read US v. Windsor, check Lexis.

Canon Law and Cloistered Women: Periculoso and Its Commentators, 1298-1545 (Studies in Medieval and Early Modern Canon Law), by Elizabeth

Pope Boniface VIII (1294-1303) published a decree in 1298 that transformed long-standing attitudes toward nuns into universal Church law. Referred to as Periculoso, the first word of the Latin text, this decree announced that all nuns, no matter what rule they observed and no matter where their monasteries were located, were to be perpetually cloistered. With the exception of those who were contagiously ill, nuns were under no circumstances to break the law of enclosure, either by leaving their monasteries or by inviting unauthorized persons into them. Ultimately, the decree altered the lives of nuns, while indirectly abetting the move toward alternatives to the cloister. Although historians of women religious have frequently cited Periculoso as a milestone, the text of the law and the legal comment that its publication occasioned have never before been exhaustively studied.

Canon Law and Cloistered Women provides the most thorough examination to date of the landmark decree. Elizabeth Makowski surveys precedents for Periculoso as well as some of the problems Boniface VIII hoped to solve with his legislation. She further analyzes the commentary on Periculoso, much of it written by practicing lawyers, which unveils late medieval attitudes toward nuns and their male counterparts. Finally, she concludes with a discussion of the attempts to enforce the legislation.

Makowski's analysis illustrates not only the contribution that similar investigations of local efforts on the Continent might make to our understanding of conventual life, but also the difficulties―so often alluded to by medieval canonists―of making the "ideal" real.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Elizabeth Makowski is associate professor of history at Southwest Texas State University. She is the coauthor of Wykked Wyves and the Woes of Marriage: Misogamous Literature from Juvenal to Chaucer (SUNY Press, 1989) and the author of numerous articles and book reviews.

PRAISE FOR THE BOOK:

"This is a significant contribution to the study of female monasticism. . . . Makowski's work is a welcome effort to understand the monastic discipline of enclosure and its application to convents. . . . What Makowski does in this fine study is to help scholars understand what [Periculoso] meant, both in the context in which it was fashioned and in the world of subsequent commentary. . . . An important book that should be required reading for all scholars of male and female monasticism."―Sixteenth Century Journal

"This is a clearly written survey of the decree and of medieval commentaries on it up to the Council of Trent. It will be of interest to historians both of legal and social history as well as throwing light upon the background of a much debated topic among religious orders."―English Historical Review

"[The] work is well-written, contains helpful information on the topic in context, and should be a useful resource for those interested in this historical era as well as for those intrigued by the institutional Church's less than even-handed treatment of cloistered contemplative women through the centuries."―Studia Canonica

"The clearly written survey of legal commentary on Periculoso is this book's greatest contribution. Even technical points of law are explained with sufficient clarity, so that the matters at issue can be understood even by one who is not a specialist in mediaeval canon law."―Ecclesiastical Law Journal

"This study provides insight into the way in which the leaders of the late medieval Church dealt with what they saw as the threat that women's spirituality posed to the Church and how to control it. To that extent alone, it is a valuable contribution to scholarship."―Catholic Historical Review

A clear and readable account of a turbulent period
By A Customer
Elizabeth Makowski has written a superb account of a crucial but little-known Church edict, the 1298 papal decretal of Pope Boniface VIII that is known as "Periculoso" (perilous) after the first word of the document; the decretal ruled on the status of women religious and proved quite controversial. As Makowski shows, the papal ruling was enforced in widely different ways, and sometimes not enforced at all, with both the enforcers and the non-enforcers claiming to have the force of canon law behind their arguments, and leaving many devoted women religious stranded somewhere in between. Makowski's research has clearly been extensive, and her writing is blessedly jargon-free.

Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre (Critical Studies of Key Texts), by Pauline Nestor

This work provides a new feminist reading of Charlotte Bronte's classic text, "Jane Eyre". While acknowledging the force of earlier "heroic" readings which saw the novel as an epic of female self-discovery, Nestor draws on recent developments in critical theory to uncover more disturbing elements which undermine the notion of a novel of progress and reveal ways in which the text can be seen as profoundly regressive; a fantasy of completeness and power which may be understood in terms of a retreat to the psychoanalytic imaginary. This study examines three major concerns of feminist analysis - motherhood, sexuality and identity - and explores the novel's deep ambivalence in each area. Throughout, Pauline Nestor sets up a dialogue between "first" and "second" wave feminist readings as a way of offering a more inclusive reading; one strengthened by its engagement with the more disconcerting aspects of the text. Nestor demonstrates clearly how new critical theories can offer illuminating perspectives on canonical texts.

Review
[Bethe was] the supreme problem solver of the twentieth century. (Freeman Dyson)

Nuclear Forces is a carefully researched, historically and biographically insightful account of the development of a profession and of one of its leading representatives during a century in which physics and physicists played key roles in scientific, cultural, political, and military developments. (David C. Cassidy, author of A Short History of Physics in the American Century)

Schweber's account of Hans Bethe's life through his Nobel Prize-winning 1938 work on energy generation in stars reveals the origins of a charismatic scientist, grounded in the importance of his parents and his Jewish roots...[Schweber] recreates the social world that shaped the character of the last of the memorable young scientists who established the field of quantum mechanics. (Publishers Weekly 2012-05-07)

A detailed and thoroughly researched study of Bethe's development as a scientist and as a human being...Schweber has trawled [Bethe's] correspondence [with Rudolf Peierls], together with Bethe's voluminous archive, with the finest of gauzes, and the result is a richly detailed picture of his life. Schweber tells it with compassion and admiration, although Nuclear Forces is no hagiography…This is a deeply rewarding book…[It's] an insightful account of how Hans Bethe became, in the constellation of 20th-century physicists, one of its most luminous stars. (Graham Farmelo Times Higher Education 2012-06-14)

Nuclear Forces is a highly readable account of a remarkable period in physics, tracing the future Nobel laureate through his formative years and up to the eve of World War II. (Manjit Kumar Wall Street Journal 2012-07-13)

Nuclear Forces, by the distinguished physicist Silvan Schweber, tells the story of the first three decades of Bethe's life and career, up to the time of his Nobel Prize–winning work on nuclear reactions in stars. But the book offers much more besides, with a history of the development of physics—atomic, solid-state and nuclear—in the first third of the twentieth century, and of the institutions in which Bethe worked. Schweber's analysis of the physics is the book's great strength. (Frank Cose Nature 2012-06-28)

Schweber, a physicist and historian of physics, provides an engaging account of the life of Hans Bethe...The book essentially ends just before the beginning of WW II. Outstanding account of the early years of a great scientist and human being
By Ash Jogalekar
Hans Bethe was one of the greatest and most versatile scientists of the twentieth century. The sheer magnitude of his scientific accomplishments ranging across almost every field of theoretical physics almost defies belief; he was probably the last "universalist", a man who could solve virtually any physics problem that came his way. The sum total of his work in science and government is so vast and diverse that it led the astrophysicist John Bahcall to joke that a conspiracy of several people must have published all those papers under the name Hans Bethe. But Bethe also had the rare distinction of being an even greater human being, a man with rock-solid integrity, strength of mind, character and equanimity. After building the atomic bomb, he worked ceaselessly until the age of 98 for nuclear disarmament and became known as the conscience of the scientific community, a Rock of Gibraltar on whom others could rely for sound and courageous advice even during the most trying of times. In every sense as both a scientist and human being, he was a role model for all of us. In this volume, his biographer Silvan Schweber tells us how Bethe became who he did. Schweber is supremely qualified to write about Bethe, having been his postdoc in the 50s and already having penned an outstanding contrasting study of Bethe and Oppenheimer as well as a superb history of quantum electrodynamics. Through many interviews and a friendship going back fifty years, Schweber gives us a rare glimpse into the personal and professional life of this great man. The biography achieves the rare goal of being both scholarly and engaging. The few technical sections can easily be skipped by non-specialists.

The account is really of the years 1906-1940, beginning with Bethe's birth and ending with his participation at the highest ranks in the Manhattan Project. Bethe grew up in Germany during the tumultuous years between the two great wars so his life is also a microcosm of German and American history during the early twentieth century. Schweber does an outstanding job in tying Bethe's background to the German scholarly and cultural tradition. His father was a noted biologist and inspired Bethe's interest in science. His remarkable mathematical talents manifested themselves at an early age. After finishing high school, his qualities were noticed by Arnold Sommerfeld, then Europe's leading teacher of physics who had already trained some of the twentieth century's most prominent theorists. Studying with Sommerfeld provided Bethe with a rigorous mathematical foundation which he then powerfully extended into new realms. It was under Sommerfeld that Bethe blossomed as a physicist. Another profound influence on him was that of Enrico Fermi with whom Bethe spent a year as a postdoctoral fellow. Fermi's dazzling simplicity of thought, mastery of all of physics and remarkable ability to get to the heart of a problem combined with Sommerfeld's rigor made Bethe uniquely positioned to apply the newly developed quantum theory to novel problems. During the twenties Bethe made key contributions to solid-state physics, quantum mechanics and nuclear physics. And his thorough grasp of the mathematical machinery of physics allowed him to instantly contribute to the new science of nuclear physics in the 30s. Throughout this time he formed lasting friendships and collaborations with outstanding theorists like Fermi, Peierls, Teller, Mott, Blackett and Oppenheimer.

Schweber has a sure grasp of Bethe's development and his achievements during the 30s. It was during this time that Bethe's professional and personal lives were profoundly changed. After Hitler came to power in 1933, Bethe whose mother was Jewish was dismissed from his academic position. After spending a year in England, he had the good fortune to be invited to Cornell University which became his home until the end of his life. Bethe's arrival at Cornell heralded a new era of physics in the United States, an era of which he became one of the leading statesmen. It was Bethe along with other famous European emigres like Fermi, Teller, Einstein and Szilard who was responsible for the ascendancy of the US in physics, a trend which has continued up to the present day. Schweber tells us how Bethe readily embraced his new country with its freedom and informality. He established a world-class center of physics at Cornell, mentored many influential physicists (both Freeman Dyson and Richard Feynman were later proteges of his), contributed an authoritative set of articles to nuclear physics (called the "Bethe Bible") and most importantly, married Rose Bethe who was the daughter of his old teacher Paul Ewald. Throughout his life Rose was a major and steadfast influence on Bethe, and he consulted her on the moral consequences of working on nuclear weapons. A separate chapter on Rose makes her importance in Hans's life clear.

It was his scientific achievements and the propitious developments in his personal life that led Bethe to call the 30s the "happy 30s". It was at the end of this decade that he made his most lasting contribution - an explanation of the origin of the sun's energy generated through nuclear fusion. As Schweber tells us, Bethe was inspired to solve this problem during a conference and, helped by his incomparable knowledge of nuclear physics, worked out the essential details in short order. This was one of those puzzles that scientists had grappled with for more than a hundred years, and Bethe solved it in a characteristically direct way. Its solution addressed an elemental aspect of human curiosity, one that manifested itself when our hominid ancestors looked up at the sky and wondered what was out there. For this achievement Bethe was unsurprisingly awarded the Nobel Prize, although the Nobel committee themselves acknowledged that he could have gotten the award for half a dozen other major discoveries. Working until the end of his long life, Bethe continued to contribute to fields as wide-ranging as particle physics, astrophysics and cosmology.

For me the most important part of this book was an appreciation of Bethe's qualities which Schweber communicates with much sensitivity and insight. It is not possible for us to mirror the extraordinary mental faculties of minds like Bethe and Einstein. But we can very much try to emulate their personal qualities which are more accessible if we persevere. In case of Bethe, one of his most important traits was an uncanny ability to sense his own strengths and limitations, to work on problems for which he "possessed an unfair advantage". Bethe knew he was not a genius like Dirac or Heisenberg. Rather, his particular strength was in applying a dazzling array of mathematical techniques and physical insight to concrete problems for which results could be compared with hard numbers from experiment. He could write down the problem and then go straight for the solution; this earned him the nickname "the battleship". Another important thing to learn from Bethe was that just like Fermi, he was willing to do whatever it took to get the solution. If it meant tedious calculations filling reams of paper, he would do it. If it meant borrowing mathematical tricks from another field he would do it. Of course, all this was possible because of his great intellect, formidable memory and extraordinary powers of concentration, but there is certainly much to learn from this attitude toward problem solving. The same approach helped him in other aspects of his life. He became extremely successful as a government consultant and scientific statesman partly because he knew when to compromise and when to push ahead. This wisdom of being diplomatic at the right time is another lesson that Bethe imparts to the rest of us. Taken together, Bethe's science and life provide ample inspiration for future scientists, policy makers and teachers. And Schweber does a wonderful job telling us how all these scientific and personal qualities manifested themselves and contributed to twentieth-century science during the tumultuous 20s and 30s.

My only regret about the book is that Schweber stops at the end of the 30s. Bethe's life during World War 2 and later is at least as interesting as his earlier years. I do hope that Schweber can write an equally insightful volume about this second phase, giving us another memorable portrait of a great scientist and citizen.

superlative in every way
By arpard fazakas
This is a superlative biography of one of the twentieth century's most important physicists. It is the very model of how to write an authoritative scientific and personal life. The author is a professor of physics and of the history of ideas at Brandeis, and thus possesses the essential expertise to write such a life. He had unparalleled access to primary sources for Bethe's life, and has produced a masterpiece.

The work focuses mainly on the first half of Bethe's long and distinguished career, up until about 1940, which includes the elucidation of the nuclear reactions which power stars for which he won the Nobel Prize. There is a brief concluding chapter which covers Bethe's role in the coming of age of quantum electrodynamics after the war, beginning with the Shelter Island Conference in June 1947, after which Bethe made his celebrated calculation of the Lamb shift which demonstrated the success of the technique of mass renormalization in avoiding the divergences which had plagued the theory.

This biography has everything one could possibly want. It is both remarkably detailed and beautifully organized. The author does an excellent job of partially separating the discussions of his subject's scientific and personal lives so that the two threads can be followed more easily. The scientific portion requires some background in physics and math to be fully understandable, but many of the more technical details are put into footnotes which greatly aids the flow of the narrative. After reading so many biographies of scientists by non-scientists in which the science is treated superficially, it gave me great pleasure to see Bethe's scientific contributions discussed with the depth and authority they deserve. The author is not just a scientist, however. He also handles the details of Bethe's personal life with great skill, insight, and humanity. He has brought his subject fully to life as a person as well as a physicist. Through his personal life we experience the high culture of Germany and Europe before the Nazis, and we become acquainted with many other famous and not-so-famous scientists of the time.

There is so much to enjoy in this book. The Introduction contains some thoughtful comments on the historiography of science. There are 5 appendices with fascinating material on the courses Bethe took as an undergraduate and graduate, his doctoral thesis, the announcement of his defense of his professorial thesis (Habiltationisschrift), and a marvellous brief history of the genesis of quantum mechanics which is the best I've ever seen. There are 81 pages of footnotes which superbly complement and extend the text and indicate the extraordinary depth and breadth of the author's research on his subject, followed by 38 pages of references which reflect the author's great erudition. This is a book which will repay many rereadings.

All in all, the author has done a superlative job of bringing his subject to life personally and professionally, placing him in the historical and cultural context of his times, and explaining the nature and importance of his scientific discoveries. This is as good a biography as I have ever read. It would seem to be the equivalent in its genre of the celebrated "Bethe Bible", the landmark series of authoritative reviews on nuclear physics which Bethe wrote in the mid 1930s and which became the basis for all subsequent progress in the field. If I had more than five stars to give, I would happily do so.

Hans Bethe to 1940
By Calochortus
There is a lot of good information here, just two problems as I see it. First, the style of the author tends toward the formal, so there are introductory words before each new section about what is coming. A second style problem infuses the whole book, namely the prose has a wordy, fuzzy quality, particularly in the sections on physics. I've read a lot better accounts of nucleosynthesis and the early history of nuclear physics than this one.

The second problem is the sudden ending of the book before Bethe's participation in building the atomic bomb, and his later misgivings. Shocking to say the least, skipping some of his most famous and interesting activities.

So, it's a mediocre book, but worth reading.

Your Everyday Art World (MIT Press), by Lane Relyea

Over the past twenty years, the network has come to dominate the art world, affecting not just interaction among art professionals but the very makeup of the art object itself. The hierarchical and restrictive structure of the museum has been replaced by temporary projects scattered across the globe, staffed by free agents hired on short-term contracts, viewed by spectators defined by their predisposition to participate and make connections. In this book, Lane Relyea tries to make sense of these changes, describing a general organizational shift in the art world that affects not only material infrastructures but also conceptual categories and the construction of meaning.

Examining art practice, exhibition strategies, art criticism, and graduate education, Relyea aligns the transformation of the art world with the advent of globalization and the neoliberal economy. He analyzes the new networked, participatory art world -- hailed by some as inherently democratic -- in terms of the pressures of part-time temp work in a service economy, the calculated stockpiling of business contacts, and the anxious duty of being a "team player" at work. Relyea calls attention to certain networked forms of art -- including relational aesthetics, multiple or fictive artist identities, and bricolaged objects -- that can be seen to oppose the values of neoliberalism rather than romanticizing and idealizing them. Relyea offers a powerful answer to the claim that the interlocking functions of the network -- each act of communicating, of connecting, or practice -- are without political content.

Review

Your Everyday Art World is a smart account of the functionality of the art world in the context of information-age capitalism. Relyea's sharp readings of trends, exhibitions, and artworks attend closely to the interweaving of the social and the economic in the art world's 'networked culture' of platforms, flexibility, and mobility, demonstrating how closely its values adhere to those of contemporary neoliberalism.

(Frazer Ward, author of No Innocent Bystanders: Performance Art and Audience)

Don't worry: this isn't yet another 'sociology of the art world.' In writing that is conversational in the best -- Socratic -- sense of the term, Lane Relyea offers a compelling analysis of the rise of networked connectivity and DIY agency in contemporary art, and the extent to which they shape our actions as art world denizens.

(Sven Lutticken, Assistant Professor, Art History, VU Amsterdam)

With prose of galvanizing punch and verve, Lane Relyea details the ways in which the flesh of art responds to the new spirit of capitalism, providing a Benjaminian jolt of homeopathic recognition. At once highly personal and rigorously engaged, this book is a model of committed criticism and a must for anyone committed to the long front of culture -- including to writing well about art.

(Judith Rodenbeck, Professor of Modern and Contemporary Art, Sarah Lawrence College; author of Radical Prototypes: Allan Kaprow and the Invention of Happenings)

That Relyea manages to build this examination from a wide lens, taking such a sweeping range of information and artists into account, pushes what could be a topic of limited interest into the realm of compelling theory, provocative while resisting any easy conclusions and ultimately finding insights that extend beyond the world of contemporary art.

(Publishers Weekly)

By locating the effects, tropes and techniques of post-Fordist regimes upon our art worlds, its institutions, and subjects, Your Everyday Art World brings a healthy dose of skepticism to many of the modalities of contemporary agency that artists and art institutions presume and have come to rely upon, perhaps too optimistically. Despite the ways Relyea himself limits the application of this critique, the book offers a strong counterpunch to the neo-entrepreneurial ideology that does indeed shape too many of our institutions and our romanticization of a "network society." As a result, Your Everyday Art World is a valuable text that should be taken up, argued over, and made use of.

(Ashley Hunt X-TRA)

Ultimately, Your Everyday Art World is a sophisticated, incisive and deeply engaged book, and Relyea's willingness to be polemical and take a position provides an example that more art historians and critics would do well to follow.

(Saelan Twerdy C Magazine)

Artworld defined as a Network with numerous Platforms
By Mike Wild Bill
The concepts are well grounded and thoroughly researched. Any artist not familiar with the new art-world paradigm is at a tremendous disadvantage. Should be required reading for all MFA graduates. Lane Relyea's academic writing style tends to be cumbersome and tedious - I prefer lucid writing with a diverse tempo and verbs that do the heavy lifting however his research and insightful commentary expound on the form of today's art world. No regrets for buying this book.

Good Read.
By John O'Hearn
Very interesting insight into some very important art happening in the last couple decades. What I like most about this book is that it discusses a group of artists and alternative spaces that aren't typically studied in art school. What I like least is when the author goes on very wordy tangents, which seem unnecessary. He seems to alternate between this and a more humble, straightforward approach, which I prefer. I'd say it's a great option for an MFA class, or any advanced student of fine art that wants to learn about the lasting affects of 90's art, which has yet to make it into the history books.

Not an overview, more an extended and too specific conference paper about two shows and their participants in Glasgow and LA.
By Reader and Writer
The book looks fantastic but one quickly realizes that it's too narrow, focused on european artists especially around Glasgow, and the artists taking part in early pop up shows in the LA area. As I read onward, through relatively plodding chapters, I kept expecting a really decent overview and wrap up. It never came. The book doesn't provide an overview of the many ways artists have taken back power from the galleries today. It also attempts to give a sort of lineage for this contemporary mindset and related events, yet this lineage as presented is scattered and rambling. I used it for a class and the smarter students of the class all had the same opinions which were: the book didn't answer the fundamental questions they wanted answered, it wasn't particularly well written, and it didn't inspire them, either with inspirational offerings or a rationale for taking art away from the systems of modifications. I tend to agree. I hoped it would build on Bourriaud's Relational Aesthetics, but sadly nope. I'm still hoping for a book that does.

Locking Eyes with Your Lion

You are responsible forever for what you have tamed.
--Antoinede Saint-Exubery

There is an obscure passage in Scripture that I doubt any Sunday school teacher has ever assigned as a memory
verse. It wasn’t exegeted in any of the systematic theology classes I took in seminary. It has absolutely no bearing on any major biblical doctrines. You may have read it a few times in a one-year Bible, but it probably didn’t even make a blip on your radar screen.

Buried in the Old Testament book of 2 Samuel, the twenty-third chapter, the twentieth and twenty-first verses,
is one of the most inconceivable and inspirational passages in Scripture:

There was also Benaiah son of Jehoiada, a valiant warrior from Kabzeel. He did many heroic deeds, which included killing two of Moab’s mightiest warriors. Another time he chased a lion down into a pit. Then, despite the snow and slippery ground, he caught the lion and killed it. Another time, armed only with a club, he killed a great Egyptian warrior who was armed with a spear. Benaiah wrenched the spear from the Egyptian’s hand and killed him with it.

It’s easy to read verses like this in the comfortable confines of your home or office and totally miss the monumental acts of courage displayed by Benaiah. Have you ever met anyone or heard of anyone chasing a lion? Sure, Barnum & Bailey have lion tamers. But lion chasers? Benaiah didn’t have a hunting rifle or Land Rover. And this was no game-park safari.

Scripture doesn’t tell us what Benaiah was doing or where he was going when he encountered this lion. We don’t know the time of day or Benaiah’s frame of mind. But Scripture does reveal his gut reaction. And it was gutsy. It ranks as one of the most improbable reactions recorded in Scripture. Usually, when the image of a man-eating beast travels through the optical nerve and registers in the visual cortex, the brain has one over-arching message: Run away.

Normal people run away from lions. They run as far and as fast as they possibly can. But lion chasers are wired differently.

For the vast majority of us, the only lions we’ve ever encountered were stuffed or caged. And few of us have experienced hand-to-hand combat that forced us to fight for our lives. But try to put yourself in Benaiah’s snow shoes.

Out of the corner of his eye, Benaiah sees something crawling. I don’t know how far away the lion is—and their vision is probably obscured by falling snow and frozen breath—but there is a moment when Benaiah and the lion lock eyes. Pupils dilate. Muscles tense. Adrenaline rushes.

What a Hollywood moment.

Imagine watching it on the movie screen with THX surround sound. Your knuckles turn white as you grip the theater seat. Blood pressure escalates. And the entire audience anticipates what will happen next. Lion encounters tend to script the same way. Man runs away like a scaredy-cat. Lion gives chase. And king of the beasts eats manwich for lunch.

But not this time! Almost as improbable as falling up or the second hand on your watch moving counterclockwise, the lion turns tail and Benaiah gives chase.

The camera films the chase at ground level.

Lions can run up to thirty-five miles per hour and leap thirty feet in a single bound. Benaiah doesn’t stand a chance, but that doesn’t keep him from giving chase. Then the lion makes one critical misstep. The ground gives away beneath his five-hundred-pound frame, and he falls down a steep embankment into a snow-laden pit. For what it’s
worth, I’m sure the lion landed on his feet. Lions are part of the cat genus, after all.

No one is eating popcorn at this point. Eyes are fixed on the screen. It’s the moment of truth as Benaiah approaches the pit. Almost like walking on thin ice, Benaiah measures every step. He inches up to the edge and peers into the pit. Menacing yellow eyes stare back. The entire audience is thinking the same thing: Don’t even think about it.

Have you ever had one of those moments where you do something crazy and ask yourself in retrospect: What was I thinking? This had to be one of those moments for Benaiah. Who in their right mind chases lions? But Benaiah now has a moment to collect his thoughts, regain his sanity, and get a grip on reality. And the reality is this: Normal people don’t chase lions.

So Benaiah turns around and walks away. The audience breathes a collective sigh of relief. But Benaiah isn’t walking away. He’s getting a running start. There is an audible gasp from the audience as Benaiah runs at the pit and takes a flying leap of faith.

The camera pans out.

You see two sets of tracks leading up to the pit’s edge. One set of foot prints. One set of paw prints. Benaiah and the lion disappear into the recesses of the pit. The view is obscured to keep it PG-13. And for a few critical moments, the audience is left with just the THX sound track. A deafening roar echoes in the cavernous pit. A bloodcurdling battle cry pierces the soul.

Then dead silence.

Freeze-frame.

Everybody in the theater expects to see a lion shake its mane and strut out of the pit. But after a few agonizing moments of suspense, the shadow of a human form appears as Benaiah climbs out of the pit. The blood from his wounds drips on the freshly fallen snow. Claw marks crisscross his face and spear arm. But Benaiah wins one of the
most improbable victories recorded in the pages of Scripture.

A Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day

Right at the outset, let me share one of my core convictions: God is in the business of strategically positioning us in the right place at the right time. A sense of destiny is our birthright as followers of Christ. God is awfully good at getting us where He wants us to go. But here’s the catch: The right place often seems like the wrong place, and the
right time often seems like the wrong time.

Can I understate the obvious?

Encountering a lion in the wild is typically a bad thing. A really bad thing! Finding yourself in a pit with a lion on a snowy day generally qualifies as a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day. That combination of circumstances usually spells one thing: death. I don't think anyone would have bet on Benaiah winning this fight—probably not even the riskiest of gamblers. He had to be at least a one-hundred-to-one underdog. And the snowy conditions on game day didn’t help his chances.

Scripture doesn’t give us a blow-by-blow description of what happened in that pit. All we know is that when the snow settled, the lion was dead and Benaiah was alive. There was one set of paw prints and two sets of footprints.

Now fast-forward two verses and look at what happens in the next scene.

2 Samuel 23:23 says: “And David put [Benaiah] in charge of his bodyguard.”

I can’t think of too many places I’d rather not be than in a pit with a lion on a snowy day. Can you? Getting stuck in a pit with a lion on a snowy day isn’t on anybody’s wish list. It’s a death wish. But you’ve got to admit something: “I killed a lion in a pit on a snowy day” looks pretty impressive on your rsum if you’re applying for a bodyguard position with the King of Israel!

You know what I’m saying?

I can picture David flipping through a stack of rsums. “I majored in security at the University of Jerusalem.” Nope. “I did an internship with the Palace Guard.” Nada. “I worked for Brinks Armored Chariots.” Thanks but no thanks.

Then David comes to the next rsum in the stack. “I killed a lion in a pit on a snowy day.” David didn’t even check his references. That is the kind of person you want in charge of your bodyguard. Lion chasers make great bouncers.

Now zoom out and look at the story through a wide-angled lens. Most people would have seen the lion as a five-hundred-pound problem, but not Benaiah. For most people, finding yourself in a pit with a lion on a snowy day would qualify as bad luck. But can you see how God turned what could have been considered a bad break into a big break? Benaiah lands a job interview with the King of Israel.

I’m sure the bodyguard position was the last thing on his mind when he encountered the lion, but Benaiah wasn’t just chasing a lion. Benaiah was chasing a position in David’s administration.

Here’s the point: God is in the rsum-building business. He is always using past experiences to prepare us for future opportunities. But those God-given opportunities often come disguised as maneating lions. And how we react when we encounter those lions will determine our destiny. We can cower in fear and run away from our greatest challenges. Or we can chase our God-ordained destiny by seizing the God-ordained opportunity.

As I look back on my own life, I recognize this simple truth: The greatest opportunities were the scariest lions. Part of me has wanted to play it safe, but I’ve learned that taking no risks is the greatest risk of all.

Giving up a full-ride scholarship at the University of Chicago to transfer to a small Bible college was a huge risk. Asking my wife, Lora, to marry me was a huge risk. (Of course, not as big a risk as Lora saying yes!) Packing all of our earthly belongings into a fifteen-foot U-haul and moving to Washington DC with no place to live and no guaranteed salary was a huge risk. Each of our three children was a huge risk. Jumping into a church plant with zero pastoral experience was a huge risk, both for me and for the church.

But when I look in the rearview mirror, I realize that the biggest risks were the greatest opportunities. Some of those life-altering decisions caused sleepless nights. The steps of faith were accompanied by acute fear that caused nausea. We experienced some financial hardships that required miraculous provision. And we had to pick ourselves up and dust ourselves off after falling flat on our faces a few times.

But those were the moments that I came alive. Those were the moments when God set the stage. Those were the moments that changed the trajectory of my life.

I needed this...

This is NOT a book to read before bed.... it is a cup of coffee in itself and packs just enough power each day to move you forward for Christ and for others you love. It IS repetitive. It NEEDS to be.... My eyes are open.....We are dead in our pews , dead in our relationships and we have been dead so long, we dont even see it or know how to come alive anymore. With the mantra of chasing lions, slowly I began to awaken. Now, I am a fool, a child AND a lion chaser. Be warned... you could be changed.

Timing is everything...

I was just going through the motions of what I thought was a normal life. Then all of the sudden I woke up one day and started to realize God was trying to do something different in me. I took a trip to visit a friend. It ended with unexpected results. I wasn't certain what was happening but each step that I took was one step closer to what God had been orchestrating for me my entire life. Everything was so unclear at first, but then as I began to read "In a Pit with a Lion on a Snowy Day" in the midst of all my uncertainty and despair. God began to reveal to me what He was planning to do and that I needed to surrender to His plan for my life and stop running from the lions He had placed in front of me. I encourage anyone and everyone to read this book! It will literally change your life, if you let it. As you being to read this book allow God to speak to you about the lions He's placed before you and whatever you do... CHASE THEM!

You'll see Benaiah in a great, new light!
By gcssite
The title is taken from 2 Samuel 23:20 where it is recorded that Benaiah "...also went down and killed a lion in the middle of a pit on a snowy day." Wow! Until Mark Batterson's book, I paid no particular attention to this verse, although Samuel's description of David's Mighty Men in the same chapter is a favorite. Batterson points out that most people would do exactly the opposite of Benaiah...that is, most people would see a lion in a pit and go the other way. Not Benaiah. Despite heavy odds against him, Benaiah went for it.

Mark Batterson did a great job of developing this short verse into great insights and encouragements to help us take on "the lions" in our own lives. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and highly recommend it to anyone interested in developing the courage and self-confidence to try what seems, at first glance, to be "too hard."

Catching Ideas

Ideas are like fish.

If you want to catch little fish, you can stay in the shallow water. But if you want to catch the big fish, you've got to go deeper.

Down deep, the fish are more powerful and more pure. They're huge and abstract. And they're very beautiful.

I look for a certain kind of fish that is important to me, one that can translate to cinema. But there are all kinds of fish swimming down there. There are fish for business, fish for sports. There are fish for everything.

Everything, anything that is a thing, comes up from the deepest level. Modern physics calls that level the Unified Field. The more your consciousness-your awareness-is expanded, the deeper you go toward this source, and the bigger the fish you can catch.

From Publishers Weekly
Lynch blends biography, filmography, spiritual quotes and his philosophical perspective on the life-changing capabilities of transcendental meditation, all within two and a half hours. Having practiced meditation for three decades, director Lynch discusses how it has influenced his life and helped him to concentrate his energy. Listeners may catch glimpses of creativity and consciousness, but Lynch's rants lack cohesion and substance. Within the audiobook's short chapters, Lynch barely broaches a topic before moving onto the next, leaving listeners to question his emphasis to go "deep." The most interesting aspects arise out of his anecdotes and comments about his films, like Eraserhead and Blue Velvet. His dry rattling voice hints at the passion behind his statements, but more often comes across as insistent and almost whiny. He reminds listeners that authors do not always make the best voices for their books. However, on the sound production end, the lightly blowing wind for the quotes from the Upanishads and Sutras adds mystical air to their reading. It's unfortunate that neither his words nor his voice live up to that standard.

From Booklist
Author David Foster Wallace once observed that, as a filmmaker, David Lynch seems to care more about getting inside the heads of his viewers than about communicating a particular message to them once he's inside. With this book, Lynch offers us a rare glimpse into his own head. A longtime practitioner of transcendental meditation, a set of meditation practices popular in the 1960s, Lynch is primarily interested in communicating to readers the powerful creative vitality that he has tapped through meditation. In 85 brief, airy chapters--many koanlike and some only a sentence or two long--Lynch discusses the techniques with which he expands his consciousness, catches ideas, and gives form to abstraction. (It's not all lofty stuff: milkshakes are, it turns out, a key vehicle for creativity.) In the process, he reveals just enough biographical information, philosophy of film, and general behind-the-scenes dirt (including the connection between Lynch's Lost Highway and O. J. Simpson)to keep the attention of those more interested in Lynch's films than in his consciousness. Brendan Driscoll

Review
“The quirky helmer known for Boy Scout demeanor and twisted tales shares his creative vision in a surprisingly gentle tome informed by the underlying teachings of Transcendental Meditation. But don’t worry: David Lynch, one-time creator of “The Angriest Dog in the World” comic, keeps the proselytizing to a minimum. He addresses topics ranging from working with wood (for it) to director’s commentaries (against) in deceptively simple, yet ultimately affirming, chapters. There’s much for fans and aspiring filmmakers to enjoy.”

“Ideas are like fish. If you want to catch little fish, you can stay in the shallow water. But if you want to catch the big fish, you've got to go deeper," says David Lynch the idiosyncratic filmmaker whose creations include Eraserhead, Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive, Inland Empire, and the cult TV classic, Twin Peaks. He claims that he has savored the pleasures of diving deep thanks to a 33-year practice of Transcendental Meditation (TM). He describes the fun of gathering what he calls "firewood" (all kinds of ideas and things for a film), the joy he takes in seeing an aging building or a rusted bridge, and the respect he has for Fellini and Kubrick. Lynch loves making movies and diving deep, and this testament bears witness to both loves.”
—Spirituality & Practice

“In Catching the Big Fish: Meditation, Consciousness, and Creativity, David Lynch puts aside his filmic quest to get inside the viewer’s head and lets them instead inside his, an invitation almost as rare as a ticket to fiction’s Wonka Chocolate Factory, and possibly just as out of this world. Catching the Big Fish is a blend of thoughts and themes, sometimes random like a stream of consciousness, or — the analogy he personally prefers for creativity — casting a hook into a bottomless sea. The book melds biography, film analysis, philosophy and spirituality with a heart-on-sleeve sincerity, while incorporatinga narrative ofthe author’s passion for charting the world of dreams and ideas and rendering them unto action.”

It is just o.k., Lynch's thoughts on life, meditation, etc., in small easy to read doses.
By hondast1100
I read some of the reviews and was curious about David Lynch's connection with meditation and his creativity. I'll admit I have only seen one Lynch product (Blue Velvet) which I found to be an excellent though bizarre film. The book kind of goes through his thoughts on life, meditation, making films and creative methods. It is a short read and feels like reading someone's thoughts that are jotted down in no particular order. I guess I was looking for a book that would really getting into the hows and whys of Mr. Lynch's creative process and meditation method vs. short thoughts, feelings and opinions. I guess if you are a huge fan of Mr. Lynch this book would give you bits and pieces of his thought process. Overall, I thought the book was just o.k.

An evening with David Lynch
By Edward scott brindley
I should start off my review by saying that I enjoyed this book and would recommend it highly. I purchased this book partially on whim after hearing verry little about it. I've always been fascinated by art and have been a musican since I was verry young. Recently I've been creativity frustrated and have been branching out into various adventures from exploring more interesting film to starting a modest meditation practice.

I recived my copy of the book after getting off work and finished it verry quickly. It's a verry easy read, its only 180 pages and around 80 something chapters. Each of the chapters explore various topics from film makers David Lynch admires to his meditation practice. This book feels like sitting down with David Lynch for an evening and just enjoying his unique perspective of the world. I treasure this book and it has inspired me.

Meditation, Creativity, and Film
By Frank
This book has a lot of interesting information in it. David Lynch talks about his experience with Transcendental Meditation and its positive effects on him. He also talks about his strategies for living a life as an artist. And there are several different pages about the movies he's made, the actors in them, and his thoughts on film in general.

His biggest points are the importance of healthy living, the importance of meditation, and being your natural self. His advice for creativity, I thought, was pretty helpful for just about any artistic medium.

The book is pretty short. It doesn't go super in depth into any one topic. Mr. Lynch spends about a page or two on each idea. It's really interesting to hear everything in his direct voice, but some more detail would have been nice.

I loved how positive David Lynch seemed in the whole book. About the biggest thing I took from the book was his advice on being healthy yourself. He says, for an artist, you have to understand things like depression to create conflict in a story. But, if you, yourself, are depressed, it will be very hard to create. So he suggests different ways throughout the book to keep yourself healthy and still make art.

This was a great way to see into David Lynch's world through his own words. There's lots of great words, advice, and information, but it is very brief. But, if you're interested in David Lynch and his approach to life strategy, it's a great book.
