Some false information being given

The preview lured me in. When I got to the part concerning Kechari Mudra the author writes that it requires several surgeries to the tongue to achieve.

As someone who has achieved Kechari Mudra without cutting the tongue I emphatically go on the record as stating cutting the tongue is NOT necessary. Practice Talabya Kriya as outlined in Ennio Nimis book and you can achieve it in a short period of time for me it took only 3 months. Just do an internet search for Ennio Nimis and Kriya you will find it swiftly.

This book also is not indexed correctly if you buy it via Kindle edition be ready to go through every page in it to get to a search phrase or word.

2012-12-23 I have found time to read more of this book and it is better than my original 3 star review so I bumped it up to 4 It may still go to a 5 star review we will see. Book formatting is still bad even on a kindle Paper White.

Part of a body of Work

I bought this after reading 2 of her other titles 'Divine Revelation', followed by 'Miracle Prayer'. I found her so interesting that I bought another 4. She's the author of 7 books at this point. Having said all this, I have only skimmed this one. I found it quite as interesting as the rest, at least what I have read so far and fully expect to learn a good deal. It's because of the excellence of her other work that I have scored this high. Susan brought 'New Thought Christianity' to my attention, something unknown to me. It's a school of thought and spiritual practice. Apparently its first advocate was Swedenborg and there followed several hundred years worth of others that included Emerson. She is thorough and reads with clarity, something of an accomplishment given the rather hard-to-define fields she writes about: e.g in 'Ascension', the transmutation of the physical body to light through a progressive divinisation. Her school of thinking is sympathetic in my view, with 'A Course In Miracles', though whether she would agree I don't know. She's serious, draws well on wide life experience and has something to offer. Her body of work is something of a resource and I think for some people could be a contribution to their exploration. And it's not just cerebral, she's nothing if not about direct personal experience and cognition. There are people who will disagree with these views, but that's life isn't it.

Impressive, unique, "woodworker friendly" instruction guide.

Shoji is the word for Japanese sliding doors and screens made of wood. Their making requires a degree of skill and attention to detail previously thought to be beyond the reach of amateur woodworkers. Now master craftsman Toshio Odate provides an illustrated, step-by-step, compendium of practical instruction that will enable the novice to successfully create and assemble two shoji projects: the common sliding screen with hipboard, plus an intricate transom featuring the beautiful asanoha pattern. Building on this foundation, Odate gives construction details and nots on eight shoji variations. Technical chapters cover the Japanese mortise-and-tenon joint, shoji paper, and home-made rice glue. Making Shoji is an impressive, unique, highly recommended, "do-it-yourself" woodworker friendly instruction guide.

If you ever want to be deeply impressed with the human ingenuity take a look at this book. The lowly shoji door, is a commonplace in Japanese homes. Not just as doors, but as windows and room dividers. And each is a work of art, put together by craftspeople like Toshio Odata using the same tools they did a thousand years ago.
For the woodworker this book is a detailed study of the techniques and processes involved in creating an object that is simple in its concept and incredibly complex in it's potential. To the student of Japanese culture the book is a vivid tour of the philosophy and commitment that underlie many of the simple, traditional factors of their lives, from doors to teacups. An insight into some of their aesthetic underpinnings.
Homeowners in Japan would collect and age wood, especially for their houses. Then an itinerant craftsman would take up residence for the time needed, building both his workshop and then features expected of him. All the tools he used must be easily portable and capable of work both delicate and massive. For a true master, an intricate door would take a day, despite being made completely from scratch.
Odate combines instruction with anecdote, while the photographs and diagrams are easy to follow. Compared to the traditional way a Japanese learned carpentry (by 'peeking' at the master) this book is a gift for those who want to master the Japanese toolset. For someone like me, who is used to modern machinery and automation, the book is a lesson in humility as well.

Older book, but helpful

I purchased this book (kindle edition) while serving in Japan doing Tsunami relief with a Christian organization. While there I became very impressed and intrigued with the amazing shoji panels and transoms I saw while doing home renovations. I thought that shoji making could be added to my woodworking and cabinetry business upon returning to the States. So before I left I purchased the book to learn more about shoji panel construction and determine if there might be any special tools needed; tools I could purchase before leaving.

For someone with a moderate to high level of woodworking experience the book does not add an abundance of new information. Insight into the Japanese woodworkers mind as to their regard to wood was certainly appreciated. While working in Japan I learnt that most wood items in the homes were highly revered. The author helps to explain such mentality.

General Western fine woodworking tools would be adequate to accomplish the shoji panels. The author does lay out some special techniques and jigs that would be needed in the building the panels, which was most helpful. While in Japan I was most impressed with the intricate geometric and flower designs of the transom panels. The author does delve into that arena with a basic geometric pattern. His instruction really helps one to understand the intricacies and time involved to accomplish building one such panel. However, most of the book covers the basics of shoji panels, something the accomplished woodworker should be able to figure out on his own. Having been in the trades for over 30 years there was not much new for me. But for the beginner and intermediate, it should be a book that would help, should you desire to make shoji panels.

the best out there at present

This is the best grammar and learning resource for Amharic that I've seen yet and I think I've seen most of them. Easily worth the price. The accompanying recordings are nice but in no way essential, in my opinion, as long as you have exposure to native speakers. (However, having someone to talk with is indispensable, so if you are trying to learn in the absence of native speakers, yes, by all means get the recordings!)

My main complaint with this book is the idiosyncratic presentation of verbs, which are the hardest part of learning this language. A GREAT addition would be a list of fully conjugated verbs, e.g. as an appendix. As it stands, verb tenses and classes are introduced piecemeal throughout the text and never fully summarized. You'll have to do that on your own. Still, despite these deficiencies, the book has a very systematic deconstruction of the language and is hugely useful. My copy is dog-eared from much travel over the course of several years in Ethiopia.

This is a very helpful textbook for those learning Amharic and for those teaching Amharic to English speakers. I would highly recommend this book even though the cost is a bit high, it is worth it, in my opinion.

I love, love, loooove this story! For whatever reason I have always had a thing for Doctors... that is why it hit home for me. The calm yet firm way Dr Goodstein treats Jessica was powerful and hot. This story was not just an erotica tale it was an adventure with a happy ending.. Two thumbs up for me!

This was my first foray into the wicked world of Alicia Collar. I have a thing for dirty doctors that have the sadist gene in them. Oh, and did this story ever deliver. I can now see why Alicia sits on the best seller list with so many of her books. Yes, they are short! Who cares! The rich, wicked writing that is inside those pages is so loaded full of deviant acts that you don't give a crap how long the book is, so long as it delivers a really sexy BDSM moment.

If I was Jessica, I would have left my boyfriend too. The `good' doctor knows how to convert a vanilla with just one dirty session in his `dungeon medical room'. Is it a bird? Is it a plane? Yes, no--it's a metaphor! Rohmann's wordless first book shows a bird flying into a dinosaur museum one dark and stormy night. The bird flits about, perching on a dinosaur jaw and soaring on. As it flies past one particular behemoth, the bones of the creature are suddenly cloaked in flesh; the bird has entered a prehistoric landscape. A dinosaur eventually swallows the bird, but as it wings its way down the creature's throat and through its digestive system, the would-be predator is transformed to a skeleton and the bird returns once again to the museum hall. The meaning of this exercise is unclear, although a jacket note explains that Rohmann was "inspired by the theory that birds are the modern relatives of the dinosaurs." The target audience will likely be mystified. Slightly older readers, however, might be intrigued by the time-travel conceit and the scientifically minded will be wowed by Rohmann's oil paintings, which capture the textures of bone, tooth, eyeball, etc., with as much attentiveness and morbidity as, say, an 18th-century still life of gamebirds. Ages 4-9.

PreSchool-Grade 3-In this wordless journey back in time, a bird flies into a museum filled with dinosaur skeletons. The walls dissolve and the skeletons take on flesh, coming to life. In a dramatic picture, the bird is eaten by what appears to be a Tyrannosaurus Rex. But the dinosaur's flesh fades away, as gradually and mysteriously as it had first appeared, and the bird flies free, easily escaping from what is again nothing but bones. The columns of the museum's grand hall reappear, and the bird flies off into the sky, watched by a pterodactyl gargoyle. This impressive effort is rather like David Wiesner's Tuesday (Clarion, 1991), sharing its elements of technical expertise and surreal fantasy. Rohmann's oil paintings (all double-page spreads) show the inside of the museum in warm, burnished browns and reds, while the colors are cooler and more varied in the outdoor light of the prehistoric scenes. Unusual perspectives and striking compositions and images make for a dynamic and intriguing book. The picture of the bird balanced on the teeth of the skeleton is a remarkable juxtaposition of delicacy and strength. This title has potential for classroom use- when studying paleontology or evolution, preparing for a field trip, or doing creative writing projects. All in all, a title that children will love.

In this wordless picture book, Rohmann sets the scene in a natural-history museum, where the dinosaur hall suddenly time-shifts into the Age of Reptiles (or were the dinosaurs the ancestors of today's birds?). During a thunderstorm, a bird flies among the dinosaur skeletons in the majestic hall. The scene subtly changes, as the walls become a landscape, the stone columns turn into trees, and the bones flesh out into living creatures. Swallowed by one of the dinosaurs, the bird flies down its throat, only to find the flesh thinning out to the bone framework again and the museum reappearing. The bird flies free again, out of the beast and out of the building. It's a short trip, but kids fascinated by dinosaurs may enjoy this vicarious voyage back in time. The handsome, atmospheric paintings heighten the drama as they tell their simple, somewhat mysterious, and quite short story. Carolyn Phelan

Imaginations will flow!

I often use this beautifully illustrated book in my classroom of 3-5 year olds. As the children view the pictures they begin talking about what they see happening without any facillitation from me. This is an excellent book to use in the classroom to promote language! Everytime we read it our plot changes a little bit! This book should be in every classroom library!

When you're having fun

I wonder what the process is behind author/illustrators of picture books making their very first wordless title. Is it something they all secretly want to do but only a few dare to? Does everyone make one and then publishers get scared and refuse to publish them? Why are there only a few on the market today? Obviously when Eric Rohmann's, "Time Flies" won the Caldecott Honor it probably raised the status of wordless picture books everywhere. I'm not suggesting that it was the first book of its kind or even the best but since its publication we've enjoyed other wordless titles like fellow Honor, "The Red Book" by Barbara Lehman and "The Boy, the Bear, the Baron, and the Bard" by Gregory Rogers. Eric Rohmann would later go on to garner the full Caldecott Award for, "My Friend Rabbit", a book done in a style entirely different from that of most of his work. By and large Rohmann feels more comfortable with gentle surrealism as in, "Cinder-Eyed Cats" and "Clara and Asha", though he's not afraid to go off and make a "Pumpkinhead" for the heck of it. In "Time Flies" we are taken on a wordless trip back and forth through time with a creature that may well be visiting his own ancestors.

On a dark and stormy orange-skied night, a small bird flies into a natural history museum of some sort. As the bird glides, perches, and looks about the hall full of bones, things begin to change around it. A bolt of lightning lights up the scene and before you know it the bird has been sent back in time to when dinosaurs weren't macabre displays but living breathing creatures. The bird flaps about brontosaurus, flies just in front of pterodactyls, and finally (in a surprise move on Rohmann's part) is snapped up by the T-Rex. Don't fret for the birdy, though. Suddenly we're with it, flying down the T-Rex's throat. An increasingly bony throat. The bird flies out of the back of the skeleton and into a half-past half-present world. As it escapes into the night a pterodactyl statue views it keenly from its perch.

Though the book makes no reference to this, I did like the juxtaposition of a bird with dinosaurs. The theory that birds are descended from the dinos is more than convincing and it would have been nice if Rohmann had slipped in a clever allusion here or there. To be fair though, this book came out in 1994 and the theory was hardly as widespread then as it is now. Rohmann plays with light and shadow in this book, conjuring up horror films and dark noirs with his use of dark tones and flickers. I give him great kudos for the moment in which the bird gets snapped up. One minute it's there. The next a T�-Rex is looking mighty pleased with itself as some feathers float gently to the forest floor. The thrill of shock kids will feel will be immediately alleviated by the safe n' sound feathered one booking it to the back of the monster's throat. Still, it's the moment that counts. And it's lovely.

The book bears some slight similarities to "Fledgling" by Robert J. Blake in that both books offer lush views of a small bird flying through unbelievable perils. A pairing of the two together would make for an excellent bird-centric private storytime. Of course the obvious pairing here is with anything made by David Wiesner. "Sector 7" or "Tuesday" (both wordless) perfected this kind of realistic surrealism in mute picture books. Rohmann does a nice enough job, but "Time Flies" lacks Wiesner's panache and oomph. It's just an awfully nice title with dinosaurs for the ancient-reptile-centric. All in all, I would not hesitate in the least to recommend this book to every kiddie that clamors for it. A great book and an enjoyable ride.

A Teacher's Perspective...

Time Flies is a wordless picturebook. In the story, a little bird is flying through the dinosaur bones in a museum when the dinosaurs suddenly come to life, covered in skin and looking for lunch! In the end, the dinosaurs are changing back to bones and the little bird flies off to safety.

This book was difficult for me. I had to really examine the pages to be able to tell the story...but maybe that is the point of a wordless picture book. My own disinterest in dinosaurs probably contributed as well, but I need to try to balance that with the fact that my students and my daughters are very interested in dinosaur books. Reader's response drives me to continue exploring the topic in order to reach children.

In the classroom, I might show children photos of the dinosaur exhibits at a museum or actually take a trip to the museum. In addition, supplimenting this book with a variety of informational books about dinosaurs would be interesting. It could even be used as a transition into the human body and our own skeletal system.

Cynthia Aldinger is the founder and Executive Director of LifeWays North America. Co-author of the book Home Away from Home: LifeWays Care of Children and Families, Cynthia has lectured and presented internationally, directs trainings and seminars across North America, and is an adjunct faculty member at Rudolf Steiner College in California. She served fourteen years on the board of Waldorf Early Childhood Association of North America and was a Waldorf Kindergarten teacher for many years after she received her Waldorf teaching certificate at Emerson College in Sussex, England. A mother and grandmother, Cynthia's passion is the preservation of the playful spirit of childhood and helping to create early childhood environments that provide the comfort, security and activities found in a healthy home.

A wonderful book & inspiring!

I really loved this book. In fact a group of us bought it and are using it in our Rose Circle meetings (A group of seasoned Waldorf teachers that meet monthly to support one another as business owners of Waldorf programs) and we are all enjoying the book very much! It is a great resource for teachers & those that want to learn a little more about the back ground of Steiner education. I highly recommend it!

Is not what it sounds like

Maybe I was looking for something more from this book in terms of examples of how to incorporate life into a curriculum. It seems like it's an overview of Steiner philosophy more than actual examples.
Waldorf education does not have a lot of curriculum idea books and that's what I was sort of hoping this one was.

If you are looking for overview and history of Waldorf education and Steiners philosophy then read it. If you are looking for curriculum or examples this is disappointing.
