The concept of rom SUDs is incorporated in many of the chapters. Medical, psychological, family and cultural aspects of addiction and recovery are addressed, providing the reader with a broad framework for understanding and helping patients with SUDs, as well as their families. THE PASSING OF MATT SCUDDER

Lawrence Block is an elegant writer. His Matthew Scudder is one of the very best serial detective characters ever created in the world of mystery fiction. Starting with the very first Scudder, The Sins of the Fathers, his novels have been rich with three-dimensional characters; his dialogue real and gritty. One reviewer said that Block "writes about the sleazier aspects of life with style, compassion, and wit." Another stated "his crime novels come so close to literature that there's no degree of difference". But sadly, the last two Scudder novels haven't come close to Blocks first 8 Scudder novels., which, admittedly is a great achievment. But when you have become used to true quality, it is a great disappointment to see a novel like this. "Flowers" uses the tired, over-done cliche of the serial killer, instead of going the much harder but so much deeper and worthwhile route of creating several, multi-dimensional characters with real, believable motives to kill. One's time would be much better spent in reading Block's earlier Scudder novels, the very best of which were "In the Midst of Death" "8 Million Ways to Die", "Out on the Cutting Edge" and "When the Sacred Ginmill Closes". I have seen too many mystery writers who, sooner or later, began to crank out formulaic, write-'em- by-the-number, cheap novelettes. Margaret Gipe

Not Getting Older, Just Getting Better

Lawrence Block, if not the greatest living writer of crime fiction, is most certainly the most prolific. Today's new class of the hardboiled gumshoe novel - Dennis Lehane, Robert Crais, even Lee Child - certainly must owe some allegiance to Block. "All the Flowers are Dying" is a poignant example of the master at the top of his craft - a powerful entry in the Matt Scudder series in which both the author and the characters face the inevitable sunset of their years. Scudder, now in his mid-sixties, a mostly-retired warhorse still haunts the Irish taverns and church basement AA meetings in New York's old Hell's Kitchen neighborhood familiar from previous works. Scudder reluctantly takes on the investigation of an elusive boyfriend as a favor to a friend, but soon finds himself drawn into the trap of a heinously clever serial killer. Make no mistake - "Flowers" is as brutal as it is melancholy, flush with gut wrenching scenes of child rape, torture, murder, and other depravity. But if you were looking for fairy tales, you wouldn't be reading Lawrence Block. There are a few twists along the way, and Block's patented grit, grime, and urban beauty of New York, building to a classic if predictable climax. The Scudder fan will appreciate the patina of Block's prose, mellowed by time, more introspective, even fatalistic. Even the fearful one-time gangster Mick Ballou has mellowed into a Brando-like Godfather figure, reminiscing about the old days while dispatching homespun wisdom. In summary, a masterful blend of savagery and passion, of black humor and reflection - compelling fiction that you'll not soon forget.

SSRD at its best!

This text was assigned for my SSRD course at the graduate level and has not disappointed. From it's reader-friendly organization to it's excellent applied examples, I will be sure to keep this in my personal collection for years to come and reference for my future academic endeavors. This newer edition added many much needed upgrades to the 1984 SSRD text published by Tawney and Gast.

This book traces the history of mining from those early moments when man first started using tools to the present day where metals continue to underpin economic activity in the post industrial age. In doing so, the history of mining methods, important events, technological developments, the important firms and the sparkling personalities that built the industry are examined in detail. At every stage, as the history of mining is traced from 40,000BC to the present day, the level of detail increases in accordance with the greater social and industrial developments that have played out as time has progressed. This means that a particular focus is given to the period since the industrial revolution and especially the 20th century. A look is also taken into the future in an effort to chart the direction this great industry might take in years to come.

About the Author
Born in 1945 Michael Coulson has been associated with the mining sector for over 30 years, although his university background is in economics where he holds a BSc from the University of London. He first worked as a graduate trainee on the legendary mining desk at James Capel in 1970, for many years the leading mining stockbroker in the City. After that he became a mining salesman at Sterling & Co and also developed the firm's research coverage of the sector. In 1973 he joined Fielding Newson-Smith (later to become NatWest Markets) as a gold mining analyst where he began a long association with the South African gold mining industry. Two years later he became senior mining analyst at L Messel (latterly Lehman Bros) where he started to produce an annual gold review which he published every year until 1991. In 1979 he moved to Panmure Gordon and in 1982 he left and joined Phillips & Drew (UBS) with the task of establishing the firm in the mining market. After a successful four years there, where two years running he was voted No 2 gold analyst in the Extel Analysts Survey, he moved to Kitcat & Aitken where he set up a highly regarded integrated mining desk. In 1990 K&A's Canadian owners closed the firm and he was briefly with County NatWest. The following year he set up a small mining team at Durlacher, but in 1992 was back in the mainstream at Credit Lyonnais Laing where he was a salesman/analyst on the firm's specialist mining team and established an expertise in African shares. He was then approached by South African bank, Nedcor, to join a start-up broking operation the bank was establishing in London. This operation was closed in 1997 and the following year he joined Paribas to head its Global Mining Team. He left Paribas in 2000 following the completion of the merger with BNP. Since then he has been doing independent research, mainly on a commissioned basis, primarily for small UK brokers lacking mining expertise. He also wrote An Insider's Guide to the Mining Sector for Harriman House, which has run to two editions and has been translated into Chinese. He is currently a non-executive director of City Natural Resources High Yield Trust. Michael lives in Wandsworth with his wife and has three daughters and two granddaughters. He has a lifelong passion for cricket and football and as befits a veteran miner, albeit of the armchair variety, also enjoys a glass or two of wine as he contemplates strategies and projects for the future.

Great book if you like John Denver

I thought that this was a great book. I read it in a very short amount of time. I think that everyone who not only loved John's music, but also loved what he stood for will like this book. I know he was not a perfect man of course he made mistakes in his marriage and in life. The reason I read this book was that I had to write a report about a conflict in someone's life and I choose John Denver. GREAT BOOK 5 STARS!

A must, for a John Denver fan. John reads his autobiography, making this audio-book on cassette, just fantastic! His constant need to be singing and performing for his fans eventually catches up to John Denver, eroding his marriage with Annie. John doesn't blame anyone but himself.
