What drew you to New York in 1887?

New York in the Gilded Age sits on the cusp of two eras.� Steamboats ruled the Hudson and the Mississippi, but the train was about to overtake them. To me, this time period�is on a border between old and new, myth and history -- it's an age of discovery, but also great misery, all bathed in an atmosphere of steam, steel, smoke and fog. The seeds of what would become the Civil Rights were being sown. Women were struggling for equality. Top hats, bustles, corsets, bustles, but Manhattan was at its most dangerous and violent. It's right between the ebbing age of the Civil War, the romance of the Victorian Era, and the industrial fog of our modern age.�

Why a mermaid story?

The mermaid sings and the compulsion is more than any man can resist. To my mind, a mermaid's song isn't the sweet melody of Disney's Ariel, it's something sad and beautiful that overwhelms anyone who hears it. Like some addictions, passions, obsessions overtake our reason. Originally I didn't start Sailor Twain�for anyone but myself. My early notes and doodles were a way to give form to some of these overpowering�creative obsessions I couldn't handle otherwise. What appeared was a gallery of characters, a steamboat captain, a frenchman wearing 18th century clothes, a famous and reclusive author—and a mermaid. Later they wanted their own lives, and had to grow beyond just voices from my head; the characters wanted their own lives, their own voices. The mermaid wanted the story to be seen through her eyes, too, not just the doomed captain's.

Is charcoal a good medium for comics?

Not really, no. It's very messy, and you have to work large because it doesn't lend itself to small detail. But for the mood of Sailor Twain�it was perfect—things come and go, and vanish in the mist. Not everything has to be said; you can hint at things, suggest them, half-show them. Combined with a greasy pencil for the lettering and a Cont� Pierre-Noire for some of the line work, it allowed me to mix styles—sometimes cartoony, sometimes realistic—without losing a certain believability.

Sailor Twain was first offered as an online serial; why?

It was an experiment in returning to the old fashioned 19th century serial—Twain, Melville, Dickens, Austen. People read some of them in Harpers Monthly and old broadsheets. Now that tradition has reincarnated as the webcomic. There's so much great work coming out in webcomics these days. Before I�started, I didn't really know what I was doing, putting out a page every Monday, Wednesday, Friday. I really wasn't too sure if anyone would go for a slow-building plot with intertwined love stories, and stick with it over a couple years. As it turns out many did.�And best of all, I�had a fascinating interaction all along the journey, with some smart, attentive readers, some of whom became friends.�

Is the Hudson River romantic?

Supremely romantic. There's beauty, tragedy, mystery there—and the North River still has many a deep secret.

Before Sailor Twain�your published books were for young readers. This latest work is for adults and contains nudity, sex and adult themes. Is this a career change?

I'm still working on picture books and other things for younger readers, I always will. But this�book is an adult story. Captain Twain is a thirty-seven year old man, and everything can be quite different for a man at that age, different from his twenties or his teenage years; so that's what I was exploring. In that mid-life period, there's a singular potency and intensity. Some people find themselves, others completely lose themselves at that time in life -- depending on what kind of mermaid is singing to them.

One of the best Graphic Novels I've read this year

Reason for Reading: Set in the 1880s, I wasn't about to pass this one by as it sounded just to my tastes.

Phenomenal! One of my favourite graphic novels of the year. This is a haunting, gothic story set in Victorian era New York, or to be more exact on a steamer upon the Hudson River. From the beginning prologue, the book is surrounded in mystery. The fog that fills the graphic panels also hovers heavily over the plot. Atmosphereic only begins to describe the aura one feels reading this book and I'll say that it didn't take me long before I forgot I was reading a graphic novel, per se. I was totally invested in these characters and the story was compelling, a real treat for someone looking for a spooky ghost story that involves much more than ghosts. On top of that the book examines love in its varied forms, how can one truly hang on to it, is temptation always too much to handle or can a certain kind of love stand against it. I was mezmorized while reading Sailor Twain and will be keeping this for a second read later down the line.

Be forewarned though that this is an adult book with frontal n*udity of both s*xes, and has s*x scenes. I thought they were represented very tastefully, just not something I would hand to anyone without knowing where their limits lay in that direction. Also there is cursing, including multiple use of the F-word.

A fantastic journey in time

One hundred years ago a steamboat traveled along the Hudson River, captained by a man named Twain. One dark rainy evening Captain Twain rescues an injured mermaid, carried her back to his cabin and began nursing her back to health. And from that one act of kindness a terrible event is set in motion, that will shape the lives and destiny of all involved--the captain, a French nobleman named Lafayette, and a reclusive author named C.G. Beaverton with a secret. For the mermaid has a secret and a curse...and she seeks to ensnare anyone that she can to help her. There's only one proven method for breaking the mermaid's curse. How many will fall prey to her powers? And how many will come out whole in the end?

Sailor Twain. That name just conjures up so many different memories if you're familiar with literature and Mark Twain. And while this story doesn't have Mark Twain in it (it doesn't reference him though) it does capture that essence of the river and its denizens. The characters are captivating and from that very first page you want to know what happens to them, what made them be the way they are, especially Lafayette, the French nobleman. And the situations the characters are placed in feel real, they make you wonder what you would do in a similar situation. Would you be able to avoid the temptation of the mermaid's call?

The thing I love most about this book is the sheer amount of research and historical content that Mark adds to the story. Dropping in names, characters, and places from the real world to create a fantastic and jaw dropping tale. FirstSecond is one of my favorite publishers, in part because they've been taking chances on the stories they tell and how they deliver these stories to the world. Lately they've taken to serialize some of the comics online--such as Tune, Friends With Boys, and this one--which gives readers a chance to build a community around the work, which ties into my favorite part of the historical context of the story given just how much is shared by Mark and the community at large. I love the fact that he shares in the blog what influenced him while creating this work, as well as sharing images and articles that fans dug up. I could see this being a great a book to use in a history class to help reluctant students see history come to life. Ok yes the teacher would have to explain the mermaid but still...even that was a part of lore during the time period. I wish that the printed book could capture all of the blog posts and the community built around this story. Hopefully once the book is printed the posts and comments will remain because they offer such great additional material.

I absolutely love Mark's illustrations. The smoky charcoal quality adds an air of mystery and suspense to the story. It makes it feel like we're really reading about something that happened on the banks of the Hudson a 100 years ago and I feel like I can hear the river lapping against the shore and the sound of the boats upon the river. And that's a feeling that I love. Mark's style reminds me of one of my other favorite FirstSecond works, Three Shadows. Although Three Shadows, charcoal lines are much more fluid and dynamic on the page, Mark captures some of that same intensity within the way his characters move and float on the page. The one thing that caught me a bit off guard with the print book vs the webbased comic is the paper choice. In the webbased version you can see that Mark choose a stark white paper to sketch upon, which adds an interesting dynamic to the story with the stark white vs. the stark black. The printed version is more of a cream color, which helps age the story and adds a different dimension to it, almost as if we're reading the diary of Captain Twain from a 100 years ago. I'm a little bit more partial to the webbased version paper, but for those that are just encountering the story for the first time the print version makes it feel like we're really diving into history. ***It should be noted that Mark draws the mermaid in her natural state, ie topless (I mean seriously what self respecting mermaid would war clothes?) Just in case you don't like that sort of thing.***

While the story stands alone, I recommend that readers also go and take a look at the blog and the community built there for some great extra material. This is great addition to any collection and I highly recommend it. I give the book 5 out of 5 stars.

Lumonosity in the graphics, fascination in the story

A few months back I was perusing Tor's fall 2012 offerings and the blurb on a graphic novel coming out through an imprint called First Second Books caught my eye:

A wildly popular--and notoriously reclusive--author makes a public debut. A French nobleman seeks a remedy for a curse. As three lives twine together in an unexpected collision, the mystery of the Mermaid of the Hudson deepens...."

That the author/illustrator was both the Editorial Director of First Second and had award-winning books in his repertoire only added to my interest.

A copy of the book arrived here soon after, courtesy of friends at Tor. I read it in one day, though the book has more depth than most graphic novels do. That depth is in both the story and the luminous quality of much of the graphics that carry the tale. There were some remarkable moments, in both story and art, between the covers of this book. The drawings are not in color, which in this case is a good thing. It helps keep the art clear, avoiding a muddy nature which can come into some graphic novels. In fact, in this book, the black-white-gray almost charcoal feel of some of the panels helps create an ethereal quality to some parts of the story that slip more into the realm of fantasy and eroticism than fiction. I also really enjoyed the maps and article bits that made up the chapter pages.

One more thing which I really liked about this book was that the publishers chose to make this book hardcover, which gave it a different feel in the hand when reading -- sort of like the good mouth-feel of an excellent wine or coffee versus what you get from the chain down the street.

About the Author
Leah is a design strategist for Intuit, where she works on the future of business and personal finance. She speaks and writes about techniques for spreading the reach of UX inside of organizations. Her work spans a variety of industries, including media, mobile, financial services, education, and non-profit. Before joining Intuit, Leah was an experience designer for Adaptive Path, a pioneering UX consultancy. Her work at Adaptive Path focused on collaborative approaches for UX design. Prior to Adaptive Path, Leah was a user experience team of one in a handful of companies, including Barclays Global Investors, where she championed firm-wide education and adoption of user experience design practices. Leah has a master's degree in library and information science from San Jose State University and a bachelor's in American studies from Barnard College. When she's not working, you can find Leah at the dog park with Roku, the cutest dog ever.

Great Resource..If You're Part Of The Target Audience

This book's title is what caught my attention and after reading it.....I think the title is prefect. Through this book, Leah is giving UX designers, both aspiring and existing, techniques and the motivation to
bring focus to the role of a UX Designer, as well as strategies on how to convince an organization that the role of UX should exist.

This book definitely has an audience and if you're part of that audience, it's a great resource; so, it's important to know who the book is not for. This book isn't as valuable for those who are already experienced UX designers and / or work in an organization which already has UX processes in place. Another situation where this material would not be helpful would be with start ups or organizations who have a more contemporary product design philosophy, e.g. anything 'Lean'. This has to do with how much the book relies on generating deliverables....lots of them. Deliverables make total sense when you're trying to convince others that UX should be taken seriously and / or if you're working in an organization which has disconnected team members. Again, if you're in situation where progress is measured by how many charts, graphs and wireframes are created - then this book is perfect for you.

Besides being very well structured and having great 'If You Only Do One Thing...' summaries, the work throughly covers situations and gives strategies on how to be successful in navigating them. Have trouble getting buy in from the boss that UX is important? ... not sure if you should be freelance or not?...dealing with an organization filled with doubters of UX's value? This book has you covered... and then some.

The '...and then some' is what leads to a kink in the book which holds it back from being invaluable from end to end. There are parts of the book where the author mixes Product Management with UX design. For example, it's not the place of the UX designer to create a 'Project Brief' or a product's 'Elevator Pitch' for the team to use. Caution should be taken in implementing these 'managerial' processes because you will likely either step on someone else's toes or take on a lot of work that a UX Designer shouldn't be doing.

If you find yourself within the target audience, aspiring UX Designers or those struggling to validate UX within an organization, the book is a great resource.

Applied UX at work

Leah Buley's "The User Experience Team of One" fills the void in current UX literature, which glosses over the challenges that UX professionals face in a fledgling UX practice.

There are two parts to the book - philosophy and practice. Philosophy serves as a short and informative primer for beginning UX pros. Practice makes up the bulk of the book and is composed of 27 UX "recipes" that you can use at various stages of a project. You won't find exhaustive coverage of each method here - that's not the point. Instead Leah takes the traditional deliverable-heavy UX techniques and distills them into key components sharing tips on how to use them in the real world. I also liked how each method had a brief section on how to apply them remotely. Let's face it for those of us working in large organizations - we're not all in the same building.

Saying "constraints largely come in the form of other people" Leah cuts right to the heart of the problem. Frequently it's not UX work that's the challenge - it's getting that crucial buy-in. While the title suggests a "Team of One" Leah's theme throughout the book is collaboration. By immersing folks into the process from the beginning you build support for your work over the course of the project. But even if that's not enough there's a dedicated chapter on UX evangelism.

So if you're newly minted UX professional and you're joining an organization with a growing UX practice - buy it. If you have experience and even if you're not a team of one - I still recommend you take a look due to the book's fresh perspective and practical focus.

In the end, The User Experience Team of One serves as a UX catalyst giving you tools to get started while arming you with tips to overcome the inevitable barriers in building a UX practice at your company.

There are plenty of books on user experience, heck there are probably 5 more being written right now. So why should you read Leah Buley's "The User Experience Team of One?" Not only is this a well written book, but Leah also fills a current void in the UX literature, which is some of the challenges that someone might face trying to start a UX program at their POW. Leah not only answers addresses this challenge, but also provides a solid framework of how to construct a plan, gain support from your colleagues, and how to show management that this is a worthwhile pursuit.

This book is dived up into two primary sections: philosophy and practice. The philosophy section is relatively short and provides a solid foundation for those just beginning to work with UX. This section walks us through the history of UX (tracing it back to the 18th century), the theory and philosophy of UX, and how to grow your career within the UX field.

The primary bulk of the book however, is devoted to putting UX into practice. Leah walks through some basic tools of the UX trade. While none of them are covered in depth, it does give a good basic understanding of how a tool works, such as the different types of surveys that might be conducted. What is even more important to me however, is that Leah doesn't just focus on UX as being a webdesign only tool. Instead she offers tips and advice that can be used for any project, including redesigning an office space or even just the layout of computers. She also offers good practical advice on how to administer these tips and tricks remotely, which is important if you're part of a larger company or offering your services to clients in different states.

As I mentioned above, Leah offers good advice on how to get buy in from the rest of the organization, which is often the biggest challenge in the UX world. She offers great advice on how to explain UX and immerse folks in the process from the beginning to help build support.

If you're interested in UX or already involved in the field, this is a good resource to have handy. While some of what's offered might be old hat to seasoned professionals, I'm willing to bet that Leah offers some new ideas to put into practice. I give the book 4 out of 5 stars, and it definitely has a place on my shelf.

As an Alexander Teacher, Feldenkrais practitioner, and Occupational Therapist, I highly recommend this book. Leland Vall has created an informative book for Alexander Teachers, students, or anyone who wants to improve their posture, coordination, and well being. The excellent photographs have helped my students and patients visualize and understand many of FM Alexander's principals such as "direction, forward and up, and positions of mechanical advantage". Each chapter is clearly written and well organized for optimal learning. You will really love this book!

Really good at explaining all the gizmos and gadgets that help make great photographs

The first, really only important question to answer is "why spend the bucks to buy this book?"

The Leica D-Lux5 comes boxed with a nicely designed, easy to understand, clearly written instructional manual. A CD inside the box contains a more comprehensive guide to your new top-of-the-line point-and-shoot. So why throw around $25 when you already have more than you probably want to read about your camera and how to use it?

The answer is because chances are you're an amateur photographer and you want to take the best pictures you can and feel comfortable that you're getting the most out of your Leica - and believe me there are a lot of gizmos and gadgets, features and functions, tightly packed in that sleek black metal case to get to know about and get used to.

The first time I picked up my new camera and checked it out, I saw an awful lot that meant little to me. The switch on the top is simple and anyone can figure out that it turns the camera on and then off. But the top of the camera also has the lever that controls the optical zoom. The back of the camera has nine buttons and a wheel, all controlling at least one but usually more functions. A door on the bottom opens into the heart of the camera and has slots for memory and battery.

Four little pinholes on the bottom let sound in. The side of the camera has a portal for the cables and cords that connect the camera to the outside world, your computer and television. All of that is on the outside where you can see it. It's the thought of all that's crammed inside that causes all the angst, at least for this Leica noob (me).

Alexander White's guidebook has the answer to what all these dials, levers, settings and switches do and how do they interplay to take really great snapshots. Guiding you through the various functions and settings in a comprehensive way is what the book is really good at.

There are nine chapters, one for each menu and mode. The book starts simply with basic information about the camera setup and basic operations such as focus, exposure, flash and viewing pictures. Things then get a little more complex. There are sections on settings for portraiture, scenery, night portraiture, picturing food and even a section on photographing parties and taking shots by candlelight. And all those mini-tutorials are in the first three chapters.

You can stay to the basics or you can dig deep and learn about the camera's O.I.S. (optical stabilization system) mode using an in-camera demo. It's more than I want to know but maybe you're into that type of thing.

The section most useful to me personally, gave me instructions on macro shooting, capturing images in extreme closeup where the subject is shown actual size, in a 1:1 ratio, flowers, bugs and other things minature.

The camera it seems can do almost anything to do with image and light and it's my guess there's a section of the book dealing with your particular topic and with many of the topics you've never thought about or imagined.

If you want to feel confident that you're taking advantage of all the technology packed into your sleek, classy black camera with the classic red dot, my advice is buy the book. You'll get a return on your $25 investment in just a couple better-informed clicks of the shutter. That electronic manual that comes with the camera, go ahead and delete it. With your copy of the "Photographer's Guide to the Leica D-Lux 5," you've got things covered and in focus.

Excellent and informative book

I agree with P. Li's review. This is an excellent book that gives very useful information about the D-Lux 5. But I think the book is useful even to advanced photographers who may not know all the features of the D-Lux 5. I am a professional photographer and normally use Leica Ms. But I do not want to travel with them. Without this book, I would not learned about all the features of the camera that aren't covered in the manual. I highly recommend this.

Love it!

I had the same guide for the D-Lux 4 and decided to get this one when I got my D-Lux 5 after looking at the content preview. It really is a different book, addressing a different camera. I love the author's simple way to describing everything. Simple in the way he explains, but don't get me wrong, he doesn't leave out anything here. Wonderful book. Recommend for everyone except advanced photographers.
