About the Author
Salvatore Fanali is Director of Research at the Institute of Chemical Methodologies, Italian National Research Council (C.N.R.) in Monterotondo (Rome), Italy, and head of the Capillary Electromigration and Chromatographic Methods Unit at the same Institute. His research activity is mainly focused on separation science including the development of modern miniaturized techniques (electrodriven and liquid chromatography). He also studies hyphenation with mass spectrometry, and development of new stationary phases. Separation methods developed are currently applied to food, pharmaceuticals, chiral environment, and biomedical analysis. He is Editor of the Journal of Chromatography A and a member of the advisory editorial board of seven international scientific journals. Fanali is the author of about 300 publications including some book chapters. He received several awards including the “Liberti Medal” in Separation Science from the Italian Chemical Society.

Paul Haddad has obtained the degrees of BSc, PhD, and DSc from the University of New South Wales. His academic career has been spent at the Australian National University, the University of New South Wales, and since 1992 at the University of Tasmania where he is currently a Distinguished Professor of Chemistry and Australian Research Council Federation Fellow. He was Director of the Australian Centre for Research on Separation Science from 2001-2013 and is currently Director of the Pfizer Analytical Research Centre. He has a long-standing research interest in analytical separations of inorganic species and has more than 500 publications in this general field. He has also presented in excess of 450 papers at local and international scientific meetings.
He is an editor of Journal of Chromatography A (since 2005), a contributing editor for Trends in Analytical Chemistry (since 2000), and was an editor of Analytica Chimica Acta for 6 years. He is currently a member of the editorial boards of 10 other journals of analytical chemistry or separation science.
He is the recipient of a number of national and international awards, including the ACS Award in Chromatography, the Marcel Golay Award, the AJP Martin Gold Medal awarded by the Chromatographic Society, the Royal Society of Chemistry Analytical Separation Methods Award, the RACI HG Smith and Analytical Division medals, the inaugural University of Tasmania Vice-Chancellor's Medal for Research Excellence, and the inaugural Tasmanian Premier’s Scientist of the Year award.

Professor Colin Poole is internationally known in the field of thin-layer chromatography and is an editor of the Journal of Chromatography and former editor of the Journal of Planar Chromatography - Modern TLC. He has authored several books on chromatography, recent examples being “The Essence of Chromatography” published by Elsevier (2003), and “Gas Chromatography” published by Elsevier (2012). He is the author of approximately 400 research articles, many of which deal with thin-layer chromatography, and is co-chair of the biennial “International Symposium on High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography”.

David Lloyd obtained his PhD from the Department of Chemistry, University of York, UK, working with Prof. David Goodall on the development of laser-based polarimetry as a chiral detection method. He then completed postdoctoral research on bioanalytical capillary electrophoresis (CE) with Prof. Irving Wainer at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, TN. He has since worked both in academia (McGill University, Departments of Oncology and Experimental Medicine) and the pharmaceutical industry (DuPont Pharmaceuticals and Bristol-Myers Squibb). Whilst at McGill, Dr. Lloyd’s analytical research focused on microscale bioanalysis by CE and on chiral CE. Since moving to the pharmaceutical industry, his responsibilities have been in analytical R&D for projects ranging from the late discovery stage through worldwide registrational filings, with a primary focus on separations science. From 1995 - 2002, Dr. Lloyd was Contributing Editor of TrAC - Trends in Analytical Chemistry; and from 1999 - 2011, he was Editor of the Journal of Chromatography B.

A Classic. Every Designer's Library Should Have This Book

Don't let the publication date throw you off. I've got the 1978 version, and it's still absolutely relevant. I've never found another book like it. Any designer creating magazine pages or multi-page publications will find core insights here. The book itself represents elegantly timeless information design. A great resource, great tool, great inspiration. Add this one to your collection.

A must have for anyone involved in producing books/magazines

With The Grid, Allen Hurlburt gives us a balanced introduction to the use of Grids in the layout of magazines, newspapers and books. Hurlburts presentation is a good, balanced and basic introduction to how grids are used in graphic design.

After a brief history of the use of grids, the book is divided into three sections. Each section deals with a specific form of print; newspapers, magazines and books. Hurlburt gives plenty of examples in each section of some of the best uses of the grid and details of the people who designed them and how they used them. We not only get plenty of examples from print but we get to see the underlying grid that was used to produce that print.

A wide variety of grids are outlined and the reader will be sure to find one grid system that works best for him/her. Despite the fact that the book was published in 1978 it retains its relevance especially given the increased popularity of desktop publishing software such as Adobe InDesign™. I found that the grids from this book worked perfectly in my design work with InDesign. There is a seven page technology appendix which is completely useless due to the age of the book, but this in no ways detracts from its value. Bottom line? If you are involved in producing magazines, books and/or newspapers, this book should be in your library.

Modular look

Despite having only ninety-six pages and using a grid that uses about three-quarters of each page (and not forgetting the text in a large point size) this can be a useful book for a designer new to publication grids. Hurlburt was a great Art Director who elevated the every two weeks Look magazine into a must-see for designers. His books always looked beautifully designed but I always thought they were rather lightweight in content -- like this grid book.

The contents look at the use of grids in newspapers, magazines and books but there really aren't too many examples shown and nowhere is there a page or spread from a publication with a grid laid on top to show exactly how the grid helps create the page design. On page fifty-eight there is a whole page illustration of a grid for the German magazine 'twen' which would be much more informative if it was laid over an actual 'twen' page showing how the headlines, columns of type and pictures conform to the grid. It's slightly annoying that most of the grids in the book are in sort of muddy mid-brown panels with black lines for the columns.

The lack of thoroughness in Hurlburt's book is really brought home if you look through Josef Muller-Brockmann's suburb book on the subject: Grid Systems in Graphic Design/Raster Systeme Fur Die Visuele Gestaltung (German and English Edition). Here you'll find page after page of detailed information about the subject: grid construction; type faces and sizes; the use of images. Consideration is also given to using grids with posters, all kinds of printed matter and exhibition design.

Hurlburts book is lovely to look at but there is no comparison with Grid systems by Muller-Brockmann. Also Hurlburt's book is far too expensive for what you'll get out of the contents.

BUYER BEWARE NOTE
I bought a paperback copy of this book recently but it was a print-on-demand inkjet copy which I thought was very poor because it's black only so that the mid-brown second color in the original hardback is reproduced as grey. The reproductions in the original were not that good to start with and made worse in the inkjet copy. I think it's worth looking around the net for the original hardback copies from Van Nostrand (1978) or the UK publisher Barrie & Jenkins (1979). My inkjet reproduction copy is of a Wiley paperback published in 1982.

An excellent book for those interested in the technical side

This book presents the technical side and history of the working components of (mostly) 35mm cameras. There are sections on shutters, aperatures, etc. There are many illustrations but I agree they are a bit spotty in quality. I enjoyed the book a lot.

I ended up returning this book. It was a great book for when it was written but now there are many modern alternatives. Camera technology moves fast so you really are better off getting something newer.

Excellent Book on Camera Technology

Norman Goldberg was Modern Photography's senior technician in the 70s-80s before it was acquired by Popular Photo. His job was to take apart new cameras and dissect their technical features, and he did an outstanding job. You just cannot find such expertise easily.
Dark Side of The Lens(DSTL) is a textbook on camera technology. Covered are classic mechanical types to more modern ones with autofocusing. Emphasis is on the mechanical and electronics aspects, but there is also a wealth of tech info on lens technology. It is not a book for casual browsing, the reader will benefit most if he has a background in electronics, optics or engineering similar to NG's.
Profusely illustrated with CAD diagrams and concisely explained by NG, this book is worth much more than its modest price. It deserves its place of honor in any camera lover's bookshelves.
The only sad thing: what are we going to do when NG (now in his 80s) is no longer around? Like Marty Forscher, NG is a legend in his own time.

About the Author

Cliffhanger ending!

When I saw that this story had first been published in an anthology with other writers' work--an anthology that is now out of print--I thought it must be a stand-alone short story. But it isn't. It ends on a cliffhanger, with Marchessa in danger and the various wolf packs on the verge of war. Although Marchessa has, by that time, made her choice between Cassius and Antony, her happiness and that of the person she chose is in jeopardy due to the threat to her life. So I was very annoyed to have the story end just like that, with no indication if it will even be continued. I wouldn't have minded if the author had left the outcome of the war still hanging in the balance, but I did want to know that Marchessa would be safe.

This is disappointing because I thought the author wove a very interesting tale. It was unusual and not as straightforward as the usual shifter books where the wolf instantly recognizes its mate and that's it. I found the whole Cassius and Antony thing a little confusing and it could perhaps have used a bit more explanation. Marchessa's dilemma was real because she's drawn to both of them and they each fulfill different needs in her. I loved how Antony insisted on giving her the choice and not forcing her compliance, although he's the Alpha. He also recognizes her strength and respects it, and because of him she is able to experience the freedom she's fought for all her life.

The story is much larger than just the Marchessa and Cassius/Antony love triangle, though, and while this made it even more interesting and unique, it also caused me to become a bit lost as many other characters were introduced and things happened without much backstory. I kept feeling like I was left out of the loop, as if I was supposed to already know stuff which wasn't explicitly mentioned. The Great Council of the wolves and who's allowed to attend or sit on the Council, the six great nations (six largest packs? Or are there only six packs of wolves in the entire world?), the on-going war between the de la Luna pack--Marchessa's father's pack--and the Woolven pack, the hunter Breslin... seriously, so many other characters and events packed into one short story.

I wish the author had chosen to write this as a full-length novel. It would have been awesome in that format because it is such a rich story, much more than a simple shifter romance, and the author could have fully developed her ideas and completed the story. The dissatisfying ending ruined it for me. I looked at her other book, "Big Bad Billionaire" which features the Woolven Alpha's story, and another reviewer mentioned that story ended abruptly too. I'm sad to say I probably won't read other books by this author because I want the satisfaction of having the main plot lines resolved by the end of the story and knowing the pair of lovers are going to be happy together, not in danger of being torn apart like Marchessa and her mate. It's hard because I liked the author's ideas very much and enjoyed most of the story--barring the parts where I was left in the dark due to the aforementioned lack of backstory or world-building.

Don't mess with this Princess!

We first met Marchesa in Big Bad billionaire when she was involved in a Romeo & Juliette type affair with an alpha from another pack. After her brief introduction I am so glad we get to hear her story. She was born into her pack as an Alpha female and has always done what she wanted. When her father trades her hand in marriage for a diamond mine to further his war Marchesa is torn between doing what is right for the pack and what she wants. She never expected to fall for the Alpha. This story is AMAZING!! The storyline follows multiple characters and multiple arcs. There is hot and heavy sex, lust, revenge, and redemption all wrapped up leaving you wanting more and more! Saranna writes kick butt warrior women who know what they want and go after it. I couldn't put this book down!

A Great new read!!!

When I started to read this book I Really did not like the main girl but she slowly grew and I started to enjoy her and the writing style of this author. Now, this group of books is brand new to me as is the author. But in no way did that take away from this story. I was never lost with the story line.

It was fast paced, action packed with lots of great detailed scenes that convinced me this was worth my time to read. It has really smooth transition from one scene to the next.

Very nice detail and what sex there is in the book is not over the top or written in a way to throw you off from the main story plot. I have to say this is a nice change from other books I have read.

About the Author
Dr. Feher is professor of Physiology and Biophysics at Virginia Commonwealth University. He received his Ph.D. from Cornell University, and has research interests in the quantitative understanding of the mechanisms of calcium uptake and release by the cardiac sarcoplasmic reticulum, in the mechanisms of calcium transport across the intestine, and in muscle contraction and relaxation. Dr. Feher developed a course in Introductory Quantitative Physiology at VCU and has been course coordinator for more than a decade. He also teaches muscle and cell physiology to medical and graduate students and is course coordinator for the Graduate Physiology survey course in physiology given at VCU’s School of Medicine.

Awful Textbook

HORRIBLE textbook. Please do not choose this as a curriculum if you are an educator. The book lists chapter objectives at the beginning of the chapter. OFTEN this is the only place in the book where that word shows up. The book gives waaaaaay too much technical information and thus all of the main points are missed. The problem sets send you off on a tedious search through the chapters, often one resorts to the internet for answers instead.
