And Update of a Favorite System

Savage Worlds Deluxe edition is a cleaned up and expanded version of the 10-dollar Savage Worlds Explorer Edition (SWEX)

A few highlights:

1. The chase rules have been changed, providing more abstract results. While I've only used the new chase rules a couple of times, I've found that they bring fast and exciting results.

2. "Guts" is no longer a skill -- except in certain settings. Rather, a simple Spirit check is called for when things get scary. The previous rules made PCs without the Guts skill cowards.

3. Pinnacle has introduced rules for "interludes" with the new edition. Simply put, this is an opportunity for a player to earn a benny and expand (or share) his character's back stories during in-game downtime. Say the party is crossing the Atlantic and will be ship-bound for weeks. The GM could take this time to allow a player an interlude. It's not much of a mechanical change to the rules, but it's a rule that definitely encourages role-playing and allows players to really flesh out their characters.

There are a few new one-sheet adventures in the back of the book, as well as expanded rules on powers.

Personally, I couldn't wait to get my hands on this book when it was released, and I strongly recommend it.

That said, there are SWEX owners who are on a tight budget, and for those folks Pinnacle has included all the rules changes from the Deluxe edition on their web page for free, so you don't NEED to buy the new edition.

And just generally speaking about the Savage Worlds system: SW is a very fun and flexible system. It is fairly easy to teach newcomers the ropes, and it's my go-to system for game conventions. The system is definitely built around making the Player Characters heroic, with the benny system and the exploding dice mechanic.

If you're looking for a gritty, realistic game, SW as written is NOT it. But if you're looking for a game of heroics, where the PCs regularly pluck victory from the jaws of defeat, you should give Savage Worlds a try.

Great System for People with Lives

I GMed Pathfinder for a group of college guys and a gal until they gained ninth level, after which I became a little disenchanted with the constant rules-digging. As none of us felt inclined toward DnD 4.0, we picked this up, and I have become totally sold on it.

As a GM, what I ESPECIALLY appreciate:
+Making NPCs or creatures is a breeze, allowing for much more time spent on the plot, cool settings, etc.

+The system is elegantly simple, and can easily accommodate any genre or action. (My players prefer it for all genres except medieval fantasy, but acknowledge it does fine there, too; they just prefer Pathfinder for that, and are psyched to be playtesting DnD Next.)

+Players aren't pigeon-holed into classes, but can choose to follow an archetype if they desire. (Oddly, some of my players DO like Pathfinder's/DnD's forced specialization.) With Savage Worlds, there's also such freedom in designing characters to fit a particular protagonist from books or movies, and anyone can be meaningful, which is emphatically FALSE for many other systems.

+Anyone can die quickly. Granted, this isn't what all players are looking for, but I find that this keeps players grounded and exploring options other than combat (or at least, mindless whacking) when things get dicey. They actually consider ducking and employing sound tactics from time to time!

+The game is designed to be kept flowing without too much prep before OR paperwork during the game session. I love not having to keep track of hit points or many different short-term effects. This aspect has freed me up to enjoy the game as much as my players. (Admittedly, some of my players HATE not having hit points; it frustrates them to score an apparently-solid hit, only to find that that hit only skids off armor or traces a scratch down a villain's thigh. They accept it, but enjoy bemoaning the situation.)

+On-line support is without peer.

Long and short, I haven't found a system that better combines cross-genre playability, adaptability, efficiency, and sheer enjoyment, nor one that comes close.

In Europe between Democracy and Dictatorship, Conan Fischer offers a captivating analysis of Europe’s turbulent history during the first half of the twentieth century. After many largely peaceful years in which Europe enjoyed unprecedented prosperity, the continent was plunged into two world wars in quick succession and a traumatic series of national revolutionary upheavals. It was a time of repeated economic crisis and even fundamental famine; an era seemingly defined by Bolshevism, Fascism and Nazism, and stained by the mass murder of continental Europe’s Jews.

Fischer traces and evaluates the history of these great events in concise and accessible chapters. He reviews key debates and theories and provides readers with a systematic introduction to the wider literature. He also argues that parallel to Europe’s desolate record of upheaval and war, more benign developments were creating the unmistakable and essentially positive foundations of contemporary European life, whether in terms of everyday experience or in the first steps along the road to today’s European Union.

About the Author
Conan Fischer is Professorial Fellow in the School of History, University of St Andrews, Scotland. He is the author of Stormtroopers: a Social, Economic and Ideological Analysis 1929-35 (1983), The German Communists and the Rise of Nazism (1991), The Rise of the Nazis (1995 & 2002) and The Ruhr Crisis 1923-1924 (2003) He is editor of The Rise of National Socialism and the Working Classes in Weimar Germany (1996) and co-editor of After the Versailles Treaty: Enforcement, Compliance, Contested Identities (with Alan Sharp, 2008). He is currently researching the history of Franco-German relations during the Great Depression (1929-32).

Good Basic Rules for the Beginner

This is a quite complete guide to what it takes to start and operate a successful business in the United States. It's broken down into three major parts that cover the three big aspects of being in business.

Part One is on the general concepts of being in business, being your own boss, the money you will need, other kinds of businesses like franchises. You need to be very honest with youself here. There are some people who just are not suited for self employment. Then there the rest of who are just not suited to work for someone else.

Part Two has two areas I recommend you read and then don't exactly do what he says.

First, he starts off with how to write a business plan. I realize that people say they don't need one, but I recommend you write one anyway. It forces you to think about aspects of your business that you might otherwise ignore, and it's better to think of them before they become problems. On the other hand, I wouldn't follow his advice on how to write the plan. Go buy one of the business plan writing software packages. They are cheap ($30 or so on eBay) will guide you through the writing process and have a bunch of pre-written plans to use as examples. I've used a couple of different packages, they were both about the same, get the one that looks best to you.

Also in Part Two is a discussion on accounting. Read what he says, but then go buy a small computer accounting system. Setting up your own system is a pain, and if you start with a computer based system, you'll not have to convert later. Indeed, the first entries you make in the system can be the purchase of the software packages, and writing off of your computer system.

Part Three kind of goes back to the general concepts of part one. Chapters include comments on things like cash, banks, credit cards, etc.

All in all, a good introductory book.

Based on my experiences with new entrepreneurs, this book will answer about 80% of the questions that they usually have . . . and about 60% of the questions they should be asking.

One of the things I did like about the book is that it considers manufacturing businesses as well as service and professional service companies. Most resources about starting up businesses ignore the opportunity of manufacturing.

This book won't make or break your business, but it will speed your process of getting ready to launch if you don't have any background in this area.

This book is less an account of the military campaign itself (it does not go into much detail about the actual fighting, movement of various units, etc.) than an examination of certain aspects of the campaign which are of primary interest to the author, namely:<br />1) the deplorable condition of German forces as they reached the gates of Moscow;<br />2) the general incompetence of the German generals and military leadership; and<br />3) the complicity of the average German soldier in the atrocities committed by the Germans in Russia.<br /><br />If you're not interested in the three topics described above, I don't recommend that you read this book. The great strength of this book are the extensive excerpts from private German letters and diaries cited by the author--from private soldiers up to the top generals. These excerpts are generally rather interesting and well-chosen, and the author does a good job of using them to support his arguments (although see below). Unfortunately, as in his previous books, the author focuses almost exclusively on German sources.<br /><br />I should also note that the rather extensive parts of the book dealing with atrocities make for grim reading--this is not a light read.<br /><br />A couple of things I didn't like about this book:<br />1) In general, the book is rather "ideological" and the author comes across less as a dispassionate historian than someone with an axe to grind. By this I mean that the author cites an impressive (and to this reader convincing) set of sources to support his arguments, but I found that his commentary often drips with disdain for the Germans--I'd have appreciated a more neutral tone...<br />2) As mentioned above, it is actually rather difficult to follow the military campaign in this book; the author doesn't mention very many specific locations or Soviet units/commanders, so its difficult to track the action (almost all references to the action are tied to German units, ie the "left flank of the 4th Army", etc.) In the author's defense, a battlefield account is obviously not the author's main focus, and he includes 18 maps of the battle which would help with this, but they are unreadable on a kindle... In my view, however, the book would have been even better if it were easier to place the author's arguments within the context of on-going military operations.<br />3) Maybe its my imagination, but the author seems to quote less from various logistics records in this book than in his previous books, and relies almost exclusively on excerpts from personal German letters/diaries, and to a lesser extent, official German unit diaries, etc. While this makes the book more interesting to read, it left me wondering whether a different author could have chosen different letters/diaries, or even different lines from the same letters, to make entirely different arguments...</p> <p>19 of 20 people found the following review helpful.<br> Another Must Read from Stahel! <br> By Seth <br>I have read all of Stahel’s books on the eastern front (as well as many other) and I these are, without doubt, the best books on the German offensive in the east in 1941. Beyond the battle narrative, what Stahel offers is much needed context for the battle (administrative, economic and ideological). The recent book by Zetterling and Frankson (The Drive on Moscow) is a rehash of many older accounts repeating some of the myths Stahel directly addresses and debunks. Consider also Andrew Nagorski’s 2007 book The Greatest Battle, Robert Forczyk’s Moscow 1941 and the older book by Albert Seaton The Battle for Moscow - all of these cast the battle as an essentially close-run encounter where the Soviets snatch their victory from the jaws of defeat. Stahel shows this was simply not the case. That German operations against Moscow in November 1941 were madness, devoid of any strategic sense. The crisis in German supply, men and material raises the question why the German high command proceeded with the offensive at all and here Stahel provides an answer – it’s what he calls National Socialist military thinking. The explanation of this is itself a whole new take on German operations in WWII and alone worth the price of the book.<br />Highly recommended!</p> <p>19 of 21 people found the following review helpful.<br> a must-have for those interested in this period <br> By Daniel P. Fradl <br>I am writing this with my audience primarily intended to be Mr. Stahel himself. Mr. Stahel, I wish to express my thanks for this excellent series of books. I have now read all four and found them to be fascinating, well-written, and most of all very informative. Having read a good deal of WW2 military history, I still believed many of the myths that you systematically destroyed through these books, all the way up to believing that some German units had seen the Kremlin glimmering in the distance. I am now glad to see much more clearly the reality of the situation in this war. The statistic that keeps jumping out at me (from the first book), was that the Germans ran out of truck tires just 6 weeks into the war -- that really illustrates up the intractable logistical/production bind they were in if the war didn't end in the first two months. And that bind grew increasingly tight as the war continued through 1941, through the end of this book. Panzer divisions with as few as 7 tanks trying to take Moscow, with massive Russian reserves and defense in depth before they even reached the well-prepared city? I now see clearly it was never going to happen.
