Excellent composition textbook

This is excellent- students are engaged by the essays. The chapters on writing techniques in the second half are extremely well done. Students actually pay attention and try to follow the instructions, which are clear and specific. Their essays have become more coherent and focused. This is the first semester I've used it. I'll continue to use it.

Great book for getting better at tactics

This book, thus far, is amazing. The only problem I've seen so far is that there are errors in the diagrams which have already been indicated by a previous poster. For instance, Problem 12 has 3 rooks for white, but the solution indicates that there is another piece in place of one of those Rooks - but considering the reader will see this as 3 Rooks, he or she will assume a completely different route. Also, on problem 14, Black is given 2 Queens. Again, if you just assume that's the case, then the answer is a 1 move mate - however you should be able to figure out which Queen was supposed to be white instead and solve it that way.

Anyways - the book is awesome and I already feel my skills getting better.

It has long been accepted that the best way for a player below master level to improve his/her chess is through the study of selected game positions to ingrain patterns of tactical solutions. This is yet another of a bumper crop of publications atimed to help in this process. It is one of three volumes that purport to be calibrated to different levels of expertise---novice, grandmaster and, in this case, master. The classifications are rather generous: these "master" level problems should be quite manageable for anyone with a CFC/USCF rating of 1800-2200. The problems are grouped by themes, which detracts from the realism of game situations. They are solved against the clock with times allotted for each group of 8 positions according to degree of difficulty---the time allotments are quite long (e.g. 70 or 75 minutes for the first few sets) which can be difficult to accommodate. The problems themselves are taken from actual games, though these are often very obscure and not to be found in most databases. Regrettably, there are some sloppy errors in the editing of the position diagrams which would completely confuse the solver. In sum, aspiring players will benefit from the study of these or virtually any other positions but this is far from the best of such books available.

One specific thing I like about it is that the answer is on the very next page instead of having to go to the back and trying to find the puzzle number, etc. I am very impressed with this book and haven't found a single mistake regarding the solutions yet.

Since I couldn't find a list of songs I'd thought I'd take a pic of the back to show. Great collection! the size of the book is smaller than I expected - having countless books with sheet music - this book is more the size of a fiction novel. Songs are laid out nicely and there is a great selection of songs in common guitar keys. My biggest complaint is that most hymns are in horrible keys for bands from their original keys. These seem to make everything easier.

Well Thought Out Formatting with a Great Collection of Hymns

Wonderful format with a great collection of classic hymns. For each song, the book shows the fingering for the chords used in that song, provides music notes for the melody for the first portion of the song for those that may need a memory refresher, and, of course, the words of the song with the chords written above. The full songs are included with the chords continuing to be written above the words so that you don't have to keep referring back to previous chords while reading the next verse.

Excellent reference on production and inventory control

Yes, it's a bit expensive, but this book is enormous and packed full of information. At 1200 pages, you're probably not going to read this from cover to cover. Instead, you'll want to have this on your shelf whenever you need information on production and inventory management. The book is actually a compilation of chapters by various authors. On the plus side, this results in having each topic covered by an expert on that specific topic. On the minus side, it results in some redundancy from chapter to chapter and inconsistency in the quality of each chapter.
What's great about this book is that if you need information on a topic related to production and inventory management, you are almost certain to find the topic covered in this book. I definitely recommend this as the starting point in your manufacturing operations library.

In writing Power-Up, I wanted to take what I had learned about Japanese art and culture and apply it to the video games that I had grown up loving so much, in an attempt to explain why Japan had been so successful throughout the world, from such an early point in gaming history. 
I wrote this book while living in Kyoto, Japan, just a few minutes' walk down the road from the original Nintendo Playing Cards building. It's a snapshot of that year of my life, as well as a history and profile of Japanese games from Super Mario to Final Fantasy to Ico. 
For the revised 2016 edition available from Dover Publications, I wrote the only thing that seemed appropriate: an all-new chapter paying tribute to the life and work of Nintendo's late president Satoru Iwata.

About the Author

Chris Kohler currently lives in North Branford, Connecticut. He graduated summa cum laude from Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts in May 2002, receiving a BA in Japanese and the Japanese Language and Literature Prize. His graduation thesis was titled "The Cinematic Japanese Video Game" and earned highest honors.
