Okay, but caution is necessary

The Everyday Handbook for Magical Mothers is a re-packaging of the Flower Fairies of the shy Victorian illustrator Cicely Mary Barker.
The portions of the book which are original are of course superb, both for their delightful fantasy, turn of the century pastoral worldview, and the excellence of craftsmanship of Barker's illustrations. The front section giving background detail is well edited and written.
The remainder of the book is padded-out with mother-daughter "projects" (I am a stay-at-home Dad so I do these with her, plus I cook) some of which are successes, and others of which are poorly thought out and end up being a lot of work for disappointment.
So, I thought to myself, "How did that happen?" And here is what I came up with:
The "Flower Faries" were coming off copyright, and needed a fresh face before they could be monetizable in the future again, but no one in mainstream publishing wanted to spend any money on it, so they decided to re-print it with padding, and handed the "fluff" part of the padding off to a young, female, recent graduate of an Ivy League School who desperately wanted to be an editor and would take a project, any project, but was about as domestic as a steel beam because she's been such a bum-s*cking grade slave all her life. She promptly purchased an old Better Homes and Gardens craft book from a neighborhood yard sale in Chelsea, and without trying any of the projects herself, proceeded to cut and paste them into this work.
Ditto for the recipes.
I went to cooking school, and it is VERY CLEAR THAT THE EDITOR DID NOT TRY SOME OF THESE RECIPES BEFORE SIGNING OFF ON THEM AND PUBLISHING THIS BOOK.
Some of the stuff in here is fun. Some of it is just wrong wrong wrong.
So, while it is a nice to have book and a fun little book of wonder for little girls, expect some disappointments if you do these projects or take these recipes at face value.
And that junior editor who pushed this through her in-tray should be fired or demoted.
