From Library Journal
Best-selling author Clancy's first nonfiction book is a thorough, highly detailed examination of the technology employed by U.S. nuclear attack submarines. After months of lobbying, Clancy was granted security clearance by the navy to board and photograph the nuclear powered USS Miami. Every inch of this state-of-the-art vessel is covered, from the hull, control room, and engine room nuclear reactors to the communications/electronic warfare space and torpedo bays. Clancy shows readers how all the components are made and how they work. Also included is the fascinating history and evolution of submarines and an inside look at life on board, from captain to crew. Much of the information here has only recently been declassified, and Clancy's insightful views on the future of this type of warship in the post-Cold War era are interesting as well. Recommended.

From Kirkus Reviews
Up periscope! with America's favorite armchair technowarrior, who here, with the cooperation of the Navy, takes readers deeper than they've ever gone inside a nuclear submarine. Clancy's fascination with underseas combat dates back at least as far as his debut novel, the sub-set The Hunt for Red October, and you can sense his pride and excitement as--after a brief but well-informed survey of the history of submarines and of a submariner's training- -he takes us aboard the USS Miami, an Improved Los Angeles-class boat berthed at the US Submarine Base in Groton, Connecticut. Those who share Clancy's almost erotic admiration for technology won't be disappointed by the tour: ``It is easy to tell that the Miami is equipped with the Mk 32 VLS system, since it is sitting level in the water,'' he tells us at once, adding that the ``33-foot- diameter hull is...approximately 3 inches thick and composed of HNY-80 high tensile steel.'' But fans of human-interest also will find that's engaging here, as the author notes, for example, that life aboard the Miami is akin to ``a combination of living in an oversized motor home and summer camp,'' with no privacy but much esprit de corps, where sleep deprivation is a major problem but dining is ``a pleasure,'' except for the preponderance of three- bean salad and the horrid-tasting orange ``bug juice''--which however, makes ``an excellent scouring powder for cleaning floors and heads.'' Clancy follows up his tour of the Miami with a briefer one of a British sub; a rundown of various submarine missions; and glances at other countries' submarines (Sweden, it turns out, has a formidable sub force). All in all: a fast-paced silent running that will please many of the author's fans--enough, perhaps, to allow a surfacing on the bestseller lists. A HUGE amount missing about Boats...what is here is, at best, 80% correct. But, the best effort out there by far!!!!
By Keko
I was a Nuclear Qualified Submarine Officer on the USS George Bancroft, SSBN-643, Gold crew. Got my Dolphins and completed all my qualifications successfully. Got out as an LT. MUC, Sea Service, and Battle "E" ribbons. Did three patrols and a long shipyard stint at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. All in the early to mid 1980's. This is a good part of the "window" of this book. Soooo, I know what is "the truth"!
The book is about 80% accurate. It goes into some great detail, but has HUGE holes in how actual enemy torpedo solutions were determined n pursued....as one simple example. It also has significant errors in the qualification process for Officers. There was a huge difference in Officer Quals to get your Dolphins...HUGE! The enlisted guy's Quals were very tough but not in the same category by a lot. Officers had to qualify to drive the boat...life n death stuff. "Dark shapes n shadows" "emergency deep" stuff. Nuclear Weapons stuff...authenticating nuclear weapon launch codes. Enlisted guys, while fantastic, did not have the level of responsibility. All enlisted guys on board were NOT nuclear qualified BTW. About 1/3 were. Every nuke qualified enlisted guy I knew was fully capable of successfully getting a BS in engineering...they were that smart. So were the sonar techs!
It totally misses Boomer missile ops & WSRT's.
The problem with the book, because of the detail it contains that is correct, makes you think it is 100% accurate. 20% is wrong (badly wrong) and a huge freaking chunk is missing. More, by far, is missing about Boats than in the the book!!!!!
Yes, submarines are called BOATS not ships. A MAJOR distinction.
So, is the book worth reading? Yes, as long as you know it is 20% incorrect and misses an incredibly huge amount of strategy and actions for torpedo warfare...plus zip of consequence on nuclear missile warfare. For a non-submariner to write this was an awesome achievement! Clancy is a cool guy...wish he was still around!

Worth the read, but out of date
By Marshal Shlafer
Very interesting, and having gone on a 5 hour ballistic sub ("boomer") ride, it filled in lots of the blanks. However, because technology has changed so much since the book was written, it's a bit out of date. Clancy did, obviously, get lots of first-hand knowledge about the subs and the submariners, and conveys the information well and in an interesting way. The photos from Clancy's collection, and others from John Gresham, are interesting but also dated in terms of both sub tech and photo quality. Was a little surprised that info on the US sub fleet ended mid-book and Clancy then picked up on the Brit fleet. Interesting comparisons and contrasts between the two countries, however.
